The Shenandoah National Park -Virginia's Skyline Drive

Updated on August 8, 2011

There is so much to be said of The Shenandoah National Park, Virginia's Skyline Drive. Skyline Drive is 105 miles of panoramic, scenic, photographic splendor.

The Shenandoah Park is host to hiking trails, waterfalls, flora, fauna, and history.

The beginning of Skyline Drive is in Front Royal, Virginia and a century of miles later ends at the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Waynesboro, Virginia.

It's a trip for every automobile, motorcycle, and...BICYCLE!

I got a call from the IFOs alerting me of an emergency bike ride that was planned for July of this 2011. It had been a couple of years since I had ridden with the "Impeccable Friends of Ohio".

The IFOs tempted me with free lodging at the Skyland Lodge. It's at the highest point on Skyline Drive, 3680 feet. These small mountains offer the most and most beautiful views, per mile, of any roads I have ridden on. The wildlife is amazing! Most every evening holds a glorious sunset.

Every morning I was awakened by the Verio. This bird sings two parts of a melody at once. The Verio migrates to warmer climates for the winter but it loves the mountains of the Blue Ridge particularly at the altitude of 4,000 feet. I've heard the Verio on Roan Mountain and near Mount Mitchell. It was so very pleasant to hear them at Skyland. I included the sound of the Verio in my videos of Skyline Drive.

Don't feed the animals! You'll see this sign in many places. There are many animals. The deer stroll right up to you. The fawn and mother saunter together. The buck trails behind. It's all there for the traveler who dares to be in awe.

These are the IFOs, "Impeccable Friends of Ohio. I'm the second guy from the left. We like riding in groups with people of the same name. We have two Mikes here and two Dennises. We're trying to enlist another Paul.

Endless wondrous scenery!

A dream for the motorist, motorcyclist, BICYCLIST!

A young man named Ian breaks away from his family's vacation for a little "cycling vacation" on the Skyline Drive.

It's a family vacation to remember and record.

It's an international photographer's paradise.

IFOS And Micky Bicycle Skyline Drive Virginia

There are many pictures that I have taken of Skyline Drive just this trip alone. I put the pictures on 3 videos and all can be seen at TheBikingDude.

The first is our day trip from Skyland at about mile marker 41 to the beginning of Skyline Drive at mile post 0. We add a few miles into Front Royal and have a nice tour of the beautiful town.

We then re-enter the Shenandoah National Park and it's mostly a climb back to Skyland. We put in over 90 miles and thought our total climbing for the day was about 10,000 feet. It felt like that anyway.

The beauty is extraordinary.

This first video is a bit long. I've added my own home-made cartoons to the video for a bit of fun. Please divide the 26 minutes up. Skip some. But you'll find scenery in the still photos and thrills in the downhill videos. I think you'll love the music. "Dida", with great respect for Joan Baez, my heroine, is part of the sound track. "They Call Me The Breeze" is too perfect for the downhill with motorcycles passing. Mulatta blows me away.

Please watch for beauty, serenity, excitement.

Skyland To Loft Mountain On Skyline Drive

At the beginning of this second video the couple that were taken by the spaceship are returned to the scenic over-look from which they were taken. If you need an explaination- you haven't watched the first video.

But this second video is shorter 15 minutes. But the beginning of this video "Skyland To Loft Mountain On Skyline Drive" has a little about the SKYLAND LODGE. We highly recommend Skyland as a place to "launch" into hiking, driving, motorcycling, and BICYCLING!

We ride our bikes to Loft Mountain from Skyland. We start at mile post 41 and ride about 40 miles to Loft Mountain.

There's a lot to see on the way.

There are smooth downhills with beautiful music.

Please enjoy.

Loft Mountain To Skyland On Skyline Drive

"Loft Mountain To Skyland On Skyline Drive" is only 11 minutes long but if you've watched the other 2 right before this one - well - it may seem longer.

But again the trip back from Loft Mountain to Skyland is full of scenic wonder, smooth descents, beautiful music, and great friends.

Relax a bit.

Please enjoy my home-made cartoons.

Please relax.

Ride with me on the Skyline Drive.

Great article and great photos. I hiked the Shenandoahs a few months ago on the Appalachian Trail, but it seemed that all the good views were on Skyline. Definitely biking Skyline next time I go back.

OH! Micky. I don´t where to start. This was so fabulous.

Well I did start by voting ALL th buttons up even funny. ´cos you doing headstands was pretty cool., but I´m afraid it did make me laugh.

Loved the flying saucer and little blue airoplane. Loved it all.

Someone singing in Spanish at the beginning? The views were so much like the mountain roads back on my lovely little island. I had a wonderful ride on my computer chair.

This really was a treat. Thank you. I hope you weren´t aching too much all over , the next day.

Bless you Micky. You are so, so special. xx

You are such a talented writer and film maker! I wouldn't begin to know how to put something like these together! All of this, added t your descriptive re-counting make this one of the most enjoyable hubs I've seen in ages and ages!

Gary's Hospice doctor paid us a visit yesterday and we found out the reason he wasn't available last Sunday was that he was riding in RAGBRAI - what a surprise!
