The Texas Rose Festival in Tyler, Texas

Updated on August 5, 2017

My grandpa loved gardening. I learned much from him. To this day I enjoy puttering around in our garden growing plants for beauty & food.

Rose Bushes

I grew up with a grandfather who not only grew roses outside all of the houses in which he lived, but he tenderly cared for them and they rewarded him with spectacular growth and beauty.

After I was married and had a home of our own, I have also grown rose bushes and have applied some of the pruning techniques that I learned from my grandfather.

My mother-in-law also loved roses and had a hardy old fashioned antique type of rose bush that grew up and covered a portion of her wooden fence in San Antonio, Texas. She would bring the cut flowers inside and float them in a rose bowl on top of her dining room table.

When she mentioned that she wanted to go to the Tyler Rose Festival one year, she came over to Houston from San Antonio and the three of us headed on up to East Texas to see the annual event.

Nation's Rose Capital

Tyler, Texas is known as "The Rose Capital of the World" and literally thousands of people converge into this medium sized East Texas town of just over 100,000 people every October for the annual four day event of the Texas Rose Festival.

People who live close enough to drive back and forth or those who choose to make a vacation trip out of it staying in local lodgings can see and engage in all of the many activities starting with the Texas Rose Festival Parade.

Starting generally on the third weekend in October, one can see beautifully decorated floats go down the streets of Tyler and as if the floats were not spectacular enough girls in gorgeous ball gowns created especially for the Rose Festival ride atop the floats.

See floats, dresses and excitement at the Rose Festival.

Each year the people creating these floats and dresses undoubtedly try to outdo the ones created in the previous year.

Of course there are the local bands marching and performing as well as other parade attractions.

This is a fun way to start the annual celebration of the rose!

The Rose Show

Many things go into the making of a successful rose show each year.

Obviously one has the gardens which contain around 500 different varieties of roses numbering approximately 38,000 plants.

The rose industry definitely impacts Tyler's economy!

Tyler has one of the nation's 24 approved rose test gardens where roses are evaluated for hardiness and disease resistance among other things prior to ever being propagated and put up for sale for rose enthusiasts to grow in their own gardens.

So if visiting the Tyler rose and garden center one will likely see amazing color combinations as well as roses of all sizes that one cannot yet see elsewhere.

The nice thing is that the 14 acre park which is open daily is free to the public.

The climate in East Texas is humid and sub-tropical much like Houston and the roses best blooming periods in both places are in the Spring and Fall of the year.

All types of roses are grown and evaluated and the old heritage varieties are kept alive and thriving.

Often the antique roses have the greatest of aromas!

Tyler Rose Festival

One fun thing to see and do while attending this annual festival is to attend the Rose Queen's Tea.

The annually chosen queen and some of her attendants and escorts dressed in their elaborate costumes are there in the rose garden to greet the public and have their photos taken next to the many attendees. There is no charge for this!

I am sure that for those vying for the honor each year it is quite a thrill. They add additional interest to the festivities just like the hoop skirted young ladies that used to adorn the beautiful grounds at Cypress Gardens in Florida used to do.

Other options include attending the Queen's Ball.

There are luncheons for both men and women, a craft's fair, lectures which can be attended and even a Rose Museum where the history of the Tyler Rose Festival is kept alive.

Whether one goes for just one day to primarily see the beautiful rose gardens as well as indoor flower exhibits which can be quite elaborate during the annual rose festival in Tyler as we did...or to spend all 4 days enjoying the varied activities, suffice it to say that you will come away with a better appreciation of everything that goes into the development and caring of rose bushes.

In my memory I can almost imagine the fragrant aromas coming from that visit to the Tyler Rose Garden during the Texas Rose Festival right now while writing this post.

      Hi Au fait,

If I were to return to the Tyler Rose Festival today, I would get much better photos but between the few that I snapped as well as the videos, one gets an idea of what this is all about. It is quite a few days of celebrations all related to the beautiful roses. Thanks for the share.

Stay warm! Spring is fast approaching! :)

I love to put roses in bedrooms as they give the room that scent that only roses have. I had this experience before when I slept in a friend's house and since then, I do the same.

Roses make me think of Valentine's Day, though I know this festival is in October. It must be a very pretty festival judging from your photos, and fun too.

We've had some nice weather the last few days, but it's to start cooling off again soon. Nevertheless, it won't be long before spring springs. ;)

Sharing this again so people can put this festival on their fall schedules.

Yes, one of the better things about Texas is the fact that roses grow well here! I have several kinds of naturalized, old-fashioned climbing roses in my yard. I'm sure this is a beautiful event! Voted up and interesting! :)

      Hi Indian Chef,

I realize that we are spoiled in the U.S. with regard to spaces. It is a vast land and the land per person ratio is much larger than in some countries. Of course it varies from state to state and some of our cities are more congested. The rose garden in Chandigarh looks beautiful. Thanks for your comment on the Texas Rose Festival in Tyler, Texas and the share.

Very beautiful pictures of roses. It reminds me of rose garden in Chandigarh about 250 kms or 150 miles from Delhi. The garden is full of roses and has over 1600 varieties of roses and is spread over 30 acres of land.. This might look small land in west but here if you live in 500 yard house in any city, you are filthy rich.

      Hi pstraubie48,

That would be nice to be able to visit your sister at the same time that the Texas Rose Festival would be happening in Tyler, Texas. Does your sister live in that part of the state? As you know, Texas is a large state! Thanks for your comment. Hope things are going well for you and your family. Sending thoughts of angels back to you. :)

My Momma used to grow the most amazing roses...full, beautiful, fragrant and so many breathtaking colors. This article made me long for those long ago days when our yard was over flowing with the beauties. I only have two bushes. I am currently growing several (about 8 more) from cuttings.

I would love to go this festival. My sister lives in Texas so maybe I can schedule a visit around the time of the festival.

Sending Angels your way :) ps

Where I live there is a rhododendron festival in the spring which is somewhat like the Tyler Rose Festival, although we don't have a flower queen. The dresses of the Rose Queen and her attendants look lovely. It was very enjoyable to read your hub about roses and watch the videos, especially since winter isn't far away!

      Hi Billy,

The town of Tyler in Texas was named after our 10th President of the United States...John Tyler. There are universities in Tyler associated with the University of Texas as well as other schools...but it is probably the President's name that has a bell ringing for you, I am guessing. We have seen the rose garden in Portland. It is beautiful! We were not there for the festival however. Thanks for the first comment.

Why does Tyler, Texas ring a bell with me? Is there a university in that town? Did someone famous come from there? There is no reason for me to know that name unless something happened there that made the news. Hmmm....I hope you know so I don't think about it all day. :)

Thanks for the interesting hub; there is a rose festival in Portland, Oregon, about two hours from here, and it is quite the event.
