This time the festival is from 1st December 2015 to 15th January 2016. You are a great traveler. You are great shopper too. You have the time and money. But the only confusion is the selection of your destination. Leave it. No more worries, please. Here comes the solution: The Grand Kerala Shopping Festival or better known as GKSF.

Before educating you on the festival, I wish to brief you on Kerala Tourism. I had presented a convincing sketch of the tourism potentialities of Kerala and the advantages of a visit to this lovely land earlier through some of my hubs. Those who missed the articles need not worry as here I drop a few lines to describe about Kerala, which is also known as the 'God's Own Country". You might have some doubts why it is called so. Then I advise you to read my hub "How Kerala got the name "God's Own Country?".

Kerala is one of the favorite destinations of travelers across the world. During the peak season, both domestic and international tourists rush to this tiny land to spend a joyful vacation here. They are so fascinated on its lush greenery, splendid back waters, pristine beaches, hill stations, marvelous mountains, traditional cuisine, etc. Except snow, Kerala has got all good ingredients required for an exotic tourist spot.

December to January is the peak tourist season. It is a pilgrim season too as hundreds of thousands of devotees come to Sabarimala from many parts of India. And this being Christmas vacation time as well, tourists from other parts of the world, especially from Europe flock the land in large numbers. Though Kerala is predominantly a Hindu majority province, Christians too have a large presence here. You can learn more on this on my another article "Christianity in Kerala" if you wish to follow the subject.

GKSF or Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (1st Dec. to 15th Jan. 2016)

Taking advantages of the tourist flow to Kerala during Dec-Jan season, the government of Kerala decided to utilize it in an organized and systematic way. The government is trying to make Kerala a shopping hub. With that aim, they started this project named 'Grand Kerala Shopping Festival' since 2007. The aim of the government is to make Kerala the trade and tourism capital of the country.

The just started season is the sixth edition of GKSF. During the season (46 days), the government hopes to make Kerala a prominent international trade center. They do whatever needed to encourage the maximum number of tourists to visit the state and shop lavishly.

You can expect a lot of discounts, tax (VAT) exemption, and gifts too while shopping. All major business categories like hotels, jewelers, supermarkets, textiles, automobiles, electronics, banks, etc take part in the shopping fest. You can buy local products, hand looms, handicrafts, tribal goods for attractive prices. There is 100% VAT exemption for buyers from outside the state. Of course it reflects in price and will definitely be cheaper when compared to the prices of other regions of the country. The government have negotiated with many of the leading national as well as international brands to give specific and attractive offers for GKSF. You are at liberty to use your Debit/Credit cards for shopping.

For Entertainment

Apart from the pleasure of getting goods at discounted price, there are plenty other reasons too to make your visit more enjoyable. It is on the entertainment sector.

This grand festival opens on December 1st and will continue till January 25, 2016. Everything under the sun will be available here in Kerala during the period for a less price. If you wish to purchase handicrafts, cashew, coconuts and coir products, the typical traditional items of Kerala, it is a good time to shop here. Besides, you can also watch the manufacturing skill of some of the above items at the venue. It is nice to observe how articles take shape.

Cultural programs such as Kathakali, Mohiniyattom and lots of other entertainment activities have also been planned to be staged at some of the selected places across the state.
