The Top State And Territory Tourist Locations: I-L

Updated on January 21, 2015

Every area has a prime tourist location. Do you know what the top tourist site is in your State or Territory?

The Frog has decided to go alphabetically through the States and Territories answering what the top tourist site is in each one. Several sources will be used. You may not agree with your area's pick. Use the comments section and tell us what you think it is.

You can see the first two hubs in this series at these links:

The goal is to give people ideas on something they can do with their family or alone. If you really consider all, you really do not have to travel very far to have a great vacation.

In most circumstances, I will attempt to link the site's website. I will also search for pictures if possible.

Ok, let's see what the top tourist sites are:

Idaho

Idaho is often bypassed as a vacation destination. If you want to go somewhere where there are not a lot of tourists, Idaho may be a great choice.

So what is the top tourist destination in Idaho?

That would be Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. You will feel as if you are on the moon when visiting this huge park. At one time, volcanoes spewed lava down creating a surface that is almost eerie to walk on.

It is a site that you just have to see for yourself. No words can accurately describe it. Take a trip to Idaho and Craters of the Moon.

Illinois

Illinois is located in the Midwest United States. It is smack dab in the middle of the corn belt. So what do tourists visit when in Illinois?

The top tourist destination in Illinois is in the city of Chicago. It is Wrigley Field, home of Baseball's Chicago Cubs.

Do you like baseball? You can visit this stadium that was built in 1914 and take in a game, or get a guided tour of this amazing piece of architecture.

This was the stadium that the famous Babe Ruth called his home run shot. Make a trip to Chicago and see world famous Wrigley Field.

Indiana

Indiana is another State that is in the heart of the United States. You can see lots of corn and soybean fields, but is that what you are searching for? I doubt it. What to do in Indiana?

The top tourist site in Indiana is in Indianapolis and is called The Brickyard. It is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500. You can see cars bypassing speeds of 200 miles per hour.

This is a great idea for a vacation. there are many types of races held at this speedway. Get tickets and head out to the races.

Iowa

The Frog grew up in Iowa. I was considering what would be the top tourist spot in this Midwestern State. Hmmm???

Well, if I see it all correctly, people go very close to where my family settled when they came from Belgium.

the site for people in Iowa is the Amana Colonies. These were Germans who settled in Eastern Iowa. The settlement is amazing. They make many crafts you can purchase and the food, oh the food. You will enter a restaurant and sit at a huge table. They serve just as if you were at a family reunion. Ask some stranger to please pass the mashed potatoes, and another if you could get some roast beef.

Yes, you must visit the Amana Colonies. It is like traveling back in time.

Kansas

No, the top site in Kansas is not Dorothy's house from the Wizard Of Oz. Kansas is full of prairies and a drive through Kansas can be a serene moment. Please don't fall asleep while driving.

So what is the top tourist site in Kansas.

That would be the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

You will experience how it felt for those pioneers traveling in covered wagons going through Kansas. This preserve was kept in standards to help us always remember how it once was.

You can find this wonderful preserve 16 miles West of Emporia, Kansas.

Kentucky

Kentucky is a beautiful State. You can always find something to see or do in Kentucky.

What do most people see when visiting Kentucky?

That would be Mammoth Cave National Park.

This is probably the biggest cave in the world. There is over 360 miles of explored passages. Book a cave tour at Mammoth Cave for your next vacation. It is an experience you will never forget.

Louisiana

Heading down South to Louisiana for a vacation?

Watch for crocodiles and stay clear of the swamps. The highest percentage of tourists choose to see Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Bourbon Street is very wild during Mardi Gras, but any time of the year is a great time to visit Bourbon Street.

Conclusion

Well these are the top tourist destinations in these areas.

Keep tuned for the next installment. Get ready for a fun vacation!
