The Rainy Season

Updated on May 21, 2012

Kununurra - The wet season

Have you ever wondered what it is like being up the top of Australia in what is called THE WET ?

We hear about the roads being flooded and not being able to travel across from Western Australia to Queensland between NOV- Dec till after about April ?

We have decided to stay here and experience a wet season , maybe more as we are both enjoying our jobs here in Kununurra.

Originally we had planned to be across in Queensland well before the rain started . However as we arrived in Kununurra the lake had a special feeling so as we settled down in Kimberleyland by the lake with the amazing wildlife I realised I could be happy here !

We know where it leaks .

Road Closures

NEVER ENTER when it says Road Closed for your own safety and that of others.

Love the wildlife

Lightning Storms

As we are in a caravan like many others here we will be continually checking for leaks as well as getting up in the middle of the night checking to see if the tarp is still there or if our chairs have blown away and landed in the lake !

We are facing the lake in our caravan so when at 3 am we have dramatic lightning storms we can sit in bed watching the amazing lightning show over the lake lighting up the sky enjoying a cup of tea as long as we make it before the power goes off .

If we lose power it soon gets very hot in here without the air conditioner so then its time to stand out in the rain to cool down once the lightning show has come to an end.

After more rain we will take a trip down the lake to enjoy more waterfalls that will be created from all the rain and add more photos on here as we explore.

Be safe not sorry

Be safe in the wet season and don't take unneccessary risks on the roads.

Always tell someone where you are traveling to in the area even on a day trip as when it rains the rivers can come up fast and will leave you stranded .

Have spare food and water in your car as well as waterproof clothes or a tarp.

Do not attempt to cross floodways if you have no idea how deep it is or the water is flowing Wait for help .

Do not leave your car if you break down as you will be found easier while with it + you will need shelter .

The storms can leave as fast as they come and it can be very hot again in a short time

I enjoyed learning more about living in the wet season. From your photos, it looks like there are also many times of spectacular beauty that makes it worth while.

Your travel tips are also useful for anyone traveling in remote areas in the US as flash floods can come up suddenly and cause dangerous currents on low lying areas and roads.

Beautiful hub - love your photographs!

Voted up and awesome. Having spent about 5 years in Thailand, I know rainy seasons very well. As it was sunny most of the year, I had only a motorbike ... so the rainy months were 'interesting' riding lol. However, at least it wasn't cold.

You decided to stay for the WET season? Those jobs must be great, because you won't be going anywhere for some time to come. A very brave decision, but a great adventure too. Enjoy and keep posting the photos they are terrific. We don't see many green tree frogs now.
