The Ever Dreaded Train Journey
We've all had at least on train journey in which we muttered the famous words;
"I'm never doing this again!"
But two weeks later we soon realise that the train journey in which we thoroughly dread becomes a reality!
The first journey
The first journey is usually the worst. The whole not knowing what platform your train is going to be on, what train station will have your favourite coffee shop and which coach on the train you are even allowed to sit in! Which obviously is not going to be first class!
But, once you have travelled through the same route a number of times you are able to pick up the "tricks of the train" to avoid all the mishaps that you have previously in the first few daunting experiences.
There's nothing more frustrating than being on a train with heavy luggage and the only free seats being the ones with paper sticking out of the top of them. Which obviously mean that they are for important people who travel a lot and are wise enough to book their train seats!
But then it dawned on me.
If there are all these seats free right now then why cant I sit on them?
Ever the optimist I decided to investigate and look what the tickets say in hope that I would be able to get some information to be able to pre-book my seat next time I travel. To my surprise I could sit on them! turns out that the seats were only reserved for some of the stops not all of them.
(which is shown on the picture included)
The train that I was currently on was the train to Liverpool Lime Street from Leeds, I was getting off at the stop which was Manchester Victoria. The majority of the reserved seats were from Newcastle to York which had passed so I could sit down!
Thank the lord.
Smug as a bug
I sat down in a seat which had a table, which is rare to come across they are usually all full!
With a huge smug look on my face I watched all the other passengers walk by and not even think to look at whether they were allowed to sit down or not. I started to realise that passengers are deferred from sitting down on certain seats because they don't want to risk confrontation from someone whos booked the seat that you could possibly be sat in and would rather stand by the door. Just like me! until I took it upon myself to investigate!
I did feel like I should tell people about this but I was sat in deep thought on a comfy seat with a table which even had charger socket to charge my phone and laptop! My work was spread across the table along with my water and cheese sandwich and the thought of someone coming onto the train and sitting in front of me with a can of Stella and smelly breath did not sound too pleasant.
So I kept it quiet!
Do you think that train journeys inwards and out of Manchester are well organised?
