The luxury way to start your holiday

Updated on April 7, 2011

Luxury travel tips

If the long dark winter is finally getting to you, why not consider taking an early holiday, and while you’re at it, add a few luxuries before you go to pamper you and lift your spirits.

There are many ‘mini treats’ you can add to your holiday to get it off to a flying start.

Here’s a list of my favourites:

Meet and greet parking

I love using meet and greet parking as it removes all the hassle of parking, either at an onsite car park or an off-site car park and catching the shuttle bus to the airport.

While it doesn’t feel too inconvenient travelling to an off-site car park before your holiday, it just feels like too much hassle on the return trip. When I my flight lands, all I want to do is get my luggage and get home as soon as possible.

Book an airport hotel room

Staying at an airport hotel the night before my holiday gives me the feeling of having a longer holiday. It’s also a great way to avoid any last minute travel nightmares getting to the airport on the day of departure.

Ideally, the hotel should be on-airport, but so long as it’s close it doesn’t really matter.

Park and stay package

Booking a park and stay package usually offers you a great deal – you get all the perks and usually save money when adding the parking as an extra.

Why not push the boat out and book a park and stay package with the meet and greet option is the best way – sometimes you can arrange for the parking company to collect your car from the hotel when you arrive – great if your hotel is on-airport or offers a shuttle service to the terminal.

Online check-in

Online check-in is a great way to avoid the airport queues. Simply go online the day before you fly, check-in, and print off your boarding passes. If you don’t have internet access, or can’t get to a computer use the self check-in terminals at the airport.

By avoiding the check-in desks you save time at the airport as you only have to drop your baggage off, if you have any.

Mobile boarding passes

Some airlines now offer mobile boarding passes, whereby your boarding pass is sent to your mobile phone, so all you need do is present your mobile phone for scanning at the airport – so convenient.

Twilight baggage drop

If you want to avoid the baggage queues and your airline offers twilight check-in, use it.

Queues should be far shorter in the evening than on the day of travel, so if your airline offers this service and you’re staying at an airport hotel the night before, give this a try.

Using this service allows you to just breeze through security the next day.

Airport lounge

Airport lounges offer a convenient, hassle-free wait for your flight.

Many offer complimentary food and drinks, newspapers and magazines, however, services offered vary slightly between lounges, so check before you book.

Some lounges have age restrictions so, if you are travelling with children, check before you book.

Stays are usually restricted to a maximum of three hours so time your stay according to your flight time.

Luggage Courier Company

This is the height of luxury, having a courier company transport your luggage to your destination.

The company picks your suitcases up at your chosen location and transports them to the destination of your choice. A guaranteed service that gives you peace of mind that your luggage won’t be lost, delayed, or just left at your departure airport.

So if the long winter appears never ending and you need some pampering, treat yourself to a relaxing holiday and consider the above holiday ‘extras’ to give your holiday a luxury start.
