Things To Do In St. Louis On A Date

Updated on July 4, 2014

Looking for something special to do with your sweetheart or on a first date? Here are some ideas that go beyond the normal dinner and a movie.

St. Louis Zoo

The St. Louis Zoo is considered one of the top zoo's in the country at it's free to enter! There is a charge for some special privileges like riding the train, watching the Sea Lion show, or taking a behind the scenes tour. You and your date can explore the six zones of the zoo during the day. Don't miss the newest exhibit - Sea Lion Sound.

In late November and all of December on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from 5:30pm to 8:30pm you can visit the zoo during Wild Lights. Visit the animals in the midst of a holiday light display.

On Friday evenings during the Summer you can enjoy Jungle Boogie. Jungle Boogie is a free concert from 5 - 8pm.

If you are planning a special date with an animal lover, may I suggest a private behind the scenes tour. There are multiple tour options so you can make plans to visit the animal that your date loves the most. There are many animal tours including penguins, giraffes, snakes, turtles, lemurs, primates, cheetahs, big cats, sea lions, insects, rhinos, elephants, and birds. The tours have to be scheduled at least three weeks in advance so plan ahead!

City Garden

City Garden is one of my new favorite places to go in St. Louis as it just opened a few years ago. It is a garden filled with plants, sculptures, and fountains. What's more - you can play in all the water features. Kids love this place and it's free!

City Garden is located at 801 Market Street in Downtown St. Louis. It is bordered by 8th and 10th Streets and Market and Chestnut Streets.

Tours of City Garden can be scheduled two weeks in advance by calling 314-241-3337 or, you can take an audio art tour on your phone by dialing 314-802-9571 or by accessing the website and selecting the ART icon.

Castlewood State Park

Go for a hike and have a picnic at the beautiful Castlewood State Park in West County. In my opinion, this park has the best views in the area with a hike up a steep hill to overlook the Meramec River. The park is located at 1401 Kiefer Creek Rd, Ballwin, MO 63021.

City Museum

Most of the time, the City Museum belongs to the kids. But, after 5pm on Friday and Saturday Nights it belongs to the adults. No one under 18 years of age is admitted. This makes the City Museum a fun date night. You and your date can explore the several stories, including a roof top, filled with creations made out of reclaimed building materials. You can crawl, climb, slide, and more. The City Museum is located at 701 N 15th Street in St. Louis, MO 63103.

Forest Park

Forest Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. it is actually 500 acres larger than Central Park in New York City. There are tons of things to do in Forest Park. You can take a walk among the beautiful lakes and flowers, ride bikes, roller skate, visit the Zoo, look at flowers in the Jewel Box, take in a show at the outdoor theater called The Muny, go to the Art Museum or the Missouri History Museum. They are all inside the park. You can also take out paddle boats or eat at The Boat House Restaurant.

The Forest Park Balloon Glow & Race is one weekend a year in September. On Friday night you can walk amongst the lit up balloon's. This is a great date night option. The evening ends with fireworks. On Saturday you can watch the balloon's race.

The Missouri Botanical Garden has been open to the public since 1859. Today, the Missouri Botanical Garden is a National Historic Landmark. It is also a center for science and conservation, education and horticultural display. You can spend a day strolling among the beautful plants, exhibits, and art work.

Cardinal's Game

Take a tour of Busch stadium or go to a Cardinal's baseball game. Finish the night at The Big Bang and sing along with the piano players or go to Ted Drewes for ice cream.

Hot Air Balloon Ride

The most expensive date on the list, but in my opinion the most romantic, would be a hot air balloon ride. I have always thought this would be an excellent way to propose. Below are links to three hot air balloon ride operators in the St.Louis area.

Horse Drawn Carriage Ride in Tower Grove Park

Tower Grove Park has been a part of St. Louis since 1868. Many of the buildings and statues in the park date back to the 1870's and 1880's. The park is enclosed by four streets and takes up 289 acres. This makes it the second largest park in St. Louis. I've taken a horse drawn carriage ride through the park at night. The park was beautiful. It was chilly so we brought some hot chocolate and a blanket to snuggle up in while on the ride. The link to the Tower Grove Park carriage rides is below.

Pere Marquette Lodge

Pere Marquette State Park is a 8,050 acre park near Grafton Illinois. St. Louisian's can take highways or ferries to get there. Depending on where you live in St. Louis and which route you take the trip to Pere Marquette could take thirty minutes to one and a half hours. Personally, I vote for the ferry ride because there are not to many opportunities to ride a ferry in St.Louis. But, both the ferry boat ride or a drive down the Great River Road are scenic options. Once at the park you can hike or horse back ride. The park has a horse stable and offers 45 - 50 minute trail rides every hour, on the hour, from 10am - 4pm. They are closed on Tuesdays. The link to their site is below.

After horseback riding you should not miss the Pere Marquette Lodge. The restaurant there has great food and a giant chess set. Where I was a child, I thought that the figures were as tall as me. It is really fun to play chess with a giant chess set.

What a magnificent city you live in! Living in Washington State and partial to the Seattle Seahawks teams, St. Louis has always been regarded as a rival town. I had no idea what I was missing by clinging to that superficial stereotype. Thank you so much for enlightening me and for sharing this wonderful and reader-friendly hub with the rest of us.

Thanks shiningirisheyes. I enjoy visiting other places but I am proud to call St. Louis my home. For me, I can't imagine living anywhere else.

If I should ever have the good fortune to arrange for a date I will tell him what Judy Garland sang - "Meet me in St. Louis."

Sounds like a beautiful region and I commend you for a lovely description of things to do.
