Things To Do In St. Louis On A Hot Day

Updated on December 29, 2012

St. Louis is a fun place to be in the summer. There are lots of activities to keep you busy during the hot weather. Sometimes the weather can top 100 degrees but there are indoor options and outdoor options that can keep you cool. From shopping to water activities to cave exploring, there are many options for keeping cool on a hot day.

St. Louis Outlet Mall

St. Louis Outlet Mall formerly known as The Mills has tons of activities for when it is too hot to be outside. It has something for everyone. You can ice skate on the same ice rink that the St. Louis Blues practice. There is a Nascar activity center inside the mall. There are go karts to ride and arcade games to play. There are also many stores including my favorite, the Banana Republic Outlet Store. The mall also includes a Family Jump Center with inflatables for the kids to jump on and the Putting Edge has glow in the dark mini-golf. There is also a movie theater and several restaurants. There are several fun activities for the kids including a big indoor playground, a trampoline rig to jump on, and a train for them to ride around on inside of the mall.

Union Station

Union Station was built in the 1890's and originally used as a train station. There are many small shops and restaurants. My favorite shop in Union Station is always The Fudgery. They make fudge in front of you while entertaining you, explaining the fudge making process, and handing out samples!

Ted Drewes

Ted Drewes has been making frozen custard in St. Louis since 1930. Ted Drewes frozen custard has its own unique flavor. It is delicious and a Saint Louis tradition. Any trip to St. Louis should not be complete without a visit to this historic institution.

There are two Ted Drewes locations. They are:

  • 6726 Chippewa Street, St. Louis, MO 63109
  • 4224 S Grand Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63111

Raging Rivers Water Park

Raging Rivers Water Park is located just over the Mississippi River in Grafton, Illinois. It has eight different zones with many water related activities. There is a wave pool, a lazy river, a kids play area, and several water slides.

Raging Rivers Water Park is located at 100 Palisades Parkway, Grafton, IL 62037.

Hurricane Harbor at Six Flags

Hurricane Harbor is a water park located within the Six Flags theme park in Eureka Missouri. Hurricane Harbor contains ten different areas ranging from the mild Pirate Ship Slides in the kiddie section to the thrilling new Bonzai Pipeline that literally drops sliders into the 290 foot slide. Check out the video of the Bonzai Pipeline below.

Hurricane Harbor is located at 4900 Six Flags Road, Eureka, MO 63025.

Johnson's Shut-ins

A natural water park is located at Southeastern Missouri. Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park is a beautiful place where the Black River flows through a bed of giant rocks sticking out of the water. The result is like a water park created by nature. It is a beautiful site to behold and something everyone should experience at least once. Both adults and children enjoy swimming, sliding and climbing through the shut-ins.

Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park is located at 148 Taum Sauk Trail in Middlebrook, Missouri 63656. The park is two hours from St. Louis and offers camping as well as a few cabins which should be booked in advance. The link to the park is below.

Meramec Caverns

Keep cool by touring Meramec Caverns. It was the former hideout for Jesse James and his gang of outlaws in the 1870's. The 400 million year old caverns are a beautiful place to tour when it's hot. Tour guides take groups through the caverns every 20-30 minute. The walking tour lasts about 45 minutes. While there you can also pan for "gold", take a river board ride or a zip line tour.

Meramec Caverns is located at 1135 State Highway W in Sullivan, MO 63080.
