Things To Do in Barcelona, Spain (TOP 5 LIST)

The city of Barcelona, Spain has an estimated population of about 1,621,530 residents (according to the 2010 Spain Census). This makes it the 2nd most populated city in Spain. Barcelona offers a variety of attractions and activities to both tourists and locals alike. Here are the top 5 things to do in Barcelona, Spain:

1. La Sagrada Familia
La Sagrada Familia was built by Antoni Gaudi and is an excellent example of modernist architecture. The architectural value of the building is enormous and even minute details have been taken great care of. Gaudi devoted his entire life to build a structure so towering and meaningful that the construction of the La Sagrada Familia was only 25% complete by the time of Gaudi’s death in 1926. Furthermore, the construction still has not been completed as of today. The projected completion date of La Sagrada Familia is anticipated to be 2026, which is the centennial of Gaudi’s death. The staff provide a guided tour that is very informative. The guides are very knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining. La Sagrada Familia is the first attraction all visitors in Spain should see, as the symbolic meaning of La Sagrada Familia is what all locals living in Barcelona appreciate.

2. Palace of Catalan Music
The Palace of Catalan Music is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. You need to book in advance and have to accompany a guided tour to view this building. The building is an architectural wonder which was designed by Lluis Domenech i Montaner, the then director of the School of Architecture of Barcelona. There are a number of architectural features that are worth noting such as the huge sculptures on the sides and the back of the stage; the stained glass skylight; the concert hall with very nice seating arrangement; and more. The palace also has a very nice museum store. The site was named as a world heritage site in 1997.

3. Camp Nou
Home of the Barcelona Catalan football (soccer) giants, the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona is much more than a simple stadium housing football, it is a means of life for local natives of Barcelona. The 100,000+ capacity stadium is full in every home Barcelona football match, as the Catalanonians live through their classy, creative, and inspirational football. Barcelona is currently home to the best football team in the world and any traveler to Barcelona should spend a day at Camp Nou to watch a football match and see just how the world’s elite team plays the world’s sport.

4. Parc Guell
Parc Guell is an iconic landmark in Barcelona. Parc Guell was designed by the inspirational Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi, who had also designed La Sagrada Familia. Parc Guell was built between 1900 and 1914 and this iconic monument is on top of one of Barcelona’s mountains. The symbolic meaning of Parc Guell cannot be undermined, as the works of art at Parc Guell are truly inspirational. Furthermore, the view of Barcelona from Parc Guell is simply stunning. Parc Guell is a definite must-see attraction for all travelers to Barcelona.

5. Beach
No visit to Barcelona can be complete without hitting the sun on one of Barcelona’s top beaches. Barcelona is home to one of the most active beach lifestyles in the world. With beach shack’s playing music and serving as many beverages as your heart desires, locals and visitors can take part in volleyball being played or relax soaking in the sun. Barcelona has two main beaches, Barceloneta and Villa Olimpica. The Villa Olimpica is by far my top recommendation. The atmosphere at Villa Olimpica is amazing. Friendly locals, friendly bars, friendly people, all while soaking up the sun and playing volleyball is the true definition of Barcelona.

Enjoy Barcelona!

I love Barcelona, it is such a vibrant city. My favourite bits were Las Ramblas, which is always buzzing with street performers and market stalls, the Gaudi architecture is fantastic, and the Picasso museum is also well worth a visit. It's difficult to choose just five things - and even though I crammed a lot in when I went there I'm going to have to go back there one day to do some more of the things on your list!

Hello, Worldinquirer, thanks for the visit and the fan mail. Your hub about Barcelona is very informative and interesting. I was in Barcelona for only a few hours a couple of years ago as a stopover on a Holland American cruise. I did, in fact, find it a city I would like to spend more time in. Who knows?
