Fresno, commonly referred to as the “Raisin Capital of The World”, was founded in 1872 and was incorporated into Fresno County on October 12,1885. The city of Fresno, California has an estimated population of 1,107,146 (according to the 2010 US Census). This makes it the 5th most populous city in California. Fresno got its nickname from the fact that it produces almost half of the world’s entire production of raisins! Fresno offers a variety of attractions and activities to both tourists and locals alike. Here are the top 5 things to do in Fresno, California:

1. The Fresno Philharmonic
Under the direction of music director Theodore Kuchar, the Fresno Philharmonic orchestra has emerged as one of the largest professional orchestras between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The orchestra is going to celebrate its 60th Anniversary in 2013. It strives to deliver a variety of music that soothes the soul, from Beethoven to Brahams, and country to blues. It plays a major role in fueling the desire to indulge in music through its lessons and educational programs.

2. Forestiere Underground Garden
Built over a 40 years period by Baldasare Forestiere, the Forestiere Underground Garden is a masterpiece of an architecture. Managed and run by the Forestiere family, it is a beautiful depiction of an underground home. Complete with a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, parlour and a pond, the Forestiere Underground Garden was constructed without the aid of blueprints. The stone walls and courtyards complement its beauty and provide a relief from the summer of Fresno.

3. Fresno Chaffee Zoo
Established in 1929, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo is the home of the famous Ross Laird’s Winged Wonders Bird Show. The mission of the zoo is to bridge the gap that exists between humans and the wildlife we are surrounded with. The “Measure Z” initiative was passed in 2004 to raise funds for the expansion of this zoo and has resulted in the breeding of very many exotic breeds, such as poison dart frogs and sloths. The Stingray Bay exhibit was opened in 2009 and has since attracted crowds from all over the world. If you love unique sightseeing adventures, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo and its unique and rare species of animals is definitely a place you should visit on your trip to Fresno.

Hahaha! I too have been to Fresno as I have friends who live there. However, we have NEVER done ANY of the above! I want to go to the zoo and the house particularly! That Roger Rocka's thing looks weird, how can you enjoy a good meal if you are trying to watch a play? Or vice versa. It just doesn't work. So I'll pass on Roger. Since my friends and I haven't done any of the above do you think it's a good enough excuse to either get another credit card or ask the bank for a loan?

This hub informed me about the Forestiere Underground Garden. It is amazing that my step-son lives in Fresno, and I have visited many times, but never heard of this. Since I am interested in environmental architecture, I will have to go see this. Thank you for making me aware.

      Voted up. Great!
