Long Beach, commonly referred to as the “Aquatic Capital of America”, was incorporated into Los Angeles County on December 13, 1897. The city of Long Beach has an estimated population of 462,257 residents (according to the 2010 US Census). This makes it the 7th most populous city in California. Long Beach is considered the maritime center and its port is the 2nd busiest in the United States. Long Beach is also an economic engine fueled by the growth in aerospace industries. Long Beach offers a variety of attractions and activities to both tourists and locals alike. Here are the top 5 things to do in Long Beach, California:

1. Naples Island
Situated on the Alamitos Bay, Naples Island was built in 1903 by Arthur Parson. Naples Island is one of the only 8 places in the western United States where one can ride a gondola. Since 1964, the time near Christmas is marked by the annual Christmas Boat Parade, in which many decorated boats traverse the canals and around Alamitos Bay. In addition, the multitude of restaurants and bars serve exotic food that one can immensely savor.

2. Catalina Express
The Catalina Express offers visitors of Long Beach the chance to visit one of the most renowned relaxation spots in southern California – Catalina Island. The Catalina Express fleet consists of 8-high speed vessels, which are visited by more than 1 million visitors every year. The Catalina Express is functional throughout the year and offers up to 30 trips every day. The fleet is equipped with advanced technology, which makes the ride safe and enjoyable.

3. Aquarium of the Pacific
Opened on June 20,1998, the Aquarium of the Pacific is a non-profit aquarium at Rainbow Harbor, Long Beach. It covers an area of 5 acres and is a member of the Association for Aquariums and Zoos. It is staffed by 900 people, many of whom are volunteers. Incredibly, the aquarium is visited by 1.5 million people every year. The aquarium houses over 11,000 animals belonging to about 500 species. These animals are distributed among 3 categories, namely Southern California and Baja Gallery, the Northern Pacific Gallery and finally, the Tropical Pacific Gallery. An outdoor area comprises of the Shark Lagoon and the Lorikeet Forest, which showcase a variety of sharks and rainbow lorikeets in their complete grandeur.

4. Terrace Theater
Located at 300 E. Ocean Boulevard, Long Beach, the Terrace Theater serves the viewers with live theatrical performances. Built in a continental style in 1978, the theater has a seating capacity of 3,051. The Theater is home to the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and plays host to variety of events such as operas, symphony performances and conventions. It is managed by Stagehand Department of the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center. A visit to the theater is enough to captivate the mind of anyone with its modest design.

5. Long Beach Museum of Art
The Long Beach Museum of Art was established in 1950. The Museum is open Thursday through Sunday, and offers family art-making workshops and guided educational tours. The museum hosts around 3,000 pieces of arts in forms of drawings, sculptures and decorated objects.
