About and hour and 45 minutes Northeast of Phoenix, AZ lies Payson, a small town that could not be more different from the dry heat most expect from Arizona. The weather in Payson is more mild in the summer and flat out cold in the winter. Phoenicians often travel to Payson and other similar locales to beat the summer heat or to see snow, depending on the time of year.

But there is more to Payson than just weather! There is shopping to do, trails to hike and nature to enjoy.

Where to stay

There are many small, quaint hotels to stay at if you want to stay in the town itself, including the Best Western Payson (pictured above). But if you are looking to be closer to nature, try one of the cozy cabins in the woods or take your family camping on one of the many campgrounds nearby.

What to Do

The main attraction in Payson must be the landscape itself. There are plenty of trails to hike and places to explore. There is also a fish hatchery close by that offers fishing and a little education if you are interested. If you'd like to stay closer to town, visit the Green Valley Park with its three lakes. There is plenty of space to enjoy the ducks and have a nice picnic along with the locals.

If you are more of history buff, there are plenty of attractions for you, too! The Strawberry Schoolhouse, the oldest schoolhouse in North America, is north of Payson. Also, Payson itself has a rich history that you can see on every corner. The older buildings have been maintained or rebuilt to honor the pioneering population that started the town. Try the Ox Bow Saloon on Main Street!

Also of great interest to the tourist crowd in this area is antiquing. Payson has many wonderful antiques stores to visit and scour for great deals and interesting pieces. Simply drive around town and you are bound to run into some fantastic stores.
