Things to Do with Kids in Holland, MI

Updated on July 31, 2012

Located in West Michigan along the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan, Holland is a vacation destination with plenty to offer families with kids. The area was settled by Dutch immigrants who held on to their home culture, so much so that at the turn of the last century people from the Netherlands often chose to move to this Michigan town because the knew they could get around perfectly fine without speaking a word of English.

While that is no longer true, the area still celebrates its heritage with Dutch themed tourist attractions and events, like the Tulip Time Festival held each May. Add beautiful beaches and a laid back, family friendly attitude and you've got the makings of a fabulous family vacation.

Holland State Park Beach

The beach is certainly one of Holland's top attractions. Located along the sandy shores of Lake Michigan, the beach is great for picnicing, swimming, skim boarding, sandcastle building, frisbee throwing and long walks along the water's edge. There is a kiosk selling items like snacks and sand pails, and a view of Holland's picturesque lighthouse, nicknamed "Big Red." Camping is available at the state park.

Kirk Park Beach

If the Holland State Park Beach is a bit too busy for you, or you just want a change of pace, try the Kirk Park Beach, a few minute's drive north of town along Lakeshore Drive. Walk from the parking lot along a wooded path until you emerge standing atop a sand dune, with the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan spread out in front of you - gorgeous.

This beach offers picnic tables and grills, modern bathrooms and vending machines up near the parking lot.

Kids can go into the chicken coop, and sometimes the Critter Barn will give out fresh eggs for families to take home.
