Pondicherry has many interesting and fun things to do for people of all ages. Millions of people from around the world visit Pondicherry for sightseeing and business purposes. Some of the places to visit in Pondicherry include Auroville, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Chunnambar beach resort, shopping, museum, botanical garden, etc. Pondicherry can be easily accessed via road and has good interconnectivity. Below you will find some of the things to do in Pondicherry that are both fun and educational for the whole family.

Places to visit in Pondicherry

Auroville is one of the awesome places to visit in Pondicherry with family and kids as it provides a peaceful setting with walking trails and huge trees. It is an experimental township in Villupuram district near Pondicherry, India. It is also called as the city of dawn and based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity and is home to 1800 people from 35 countries. Auroville is divided into four different zones such as cultural zone, industrial zone, residential zone and International zone.

Cultural zone: Cultural zone covers nearly 93 hectare area and located to the east of the peace area. It is a site for applied research and artistic expression. It also provides facilities for various activities including sports, education and art.

Industrial zone: Industrial zone is a 109 hectare area and it is a zone for green industries. It contains small and medium scale industries, city's administration and arts and crafts.

Residential zone: Residential zone is one of the largest of the four city zones and comprises of 189 hectares. This zone provides a well-adjusted habitat between individual and collective living. Almost 55% of the area will be green and only 45% built surface.

International zone: It is a zone of 74 hectares to the west of the peace area.

Peace area: Here you will see Matrimandir, the spiritual center of auroville. It comprises of gardens, amphitheatren with the urn and the banyan tree.

Green belt: It is a zone for organic farms, dairies, forests and wildlife areas.

2. Sri Aurobindo Ashram:

It is one of the major tourist spot in Pondicherry. The tombs of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother (Mirra Alfassa) is located here and it is a place for silence and meditation. It is open for fixed number of hours every day. It is located in busy city and provides excellent meditation facilities. Ashram provides some basic requirements for members like food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Also there is a book shop and you can find some interesting titles in many languages. Other things incude gardens, printing press, farms, small scale industries and libraries.

3. Pondicherry Museum:

Pondicherry museum is located in Bharathi park and houses some of the beautiful sculpture from Pallava, Chola and Vijaynagara temples. You can see the French colonial details in the section of the museum. It contains beautiful collection of snail shells, temple lamps, handicrafts, arts, bronze sculptures of gods and goddess. Some specimens of Chola and Pandiya art is also displayed in this museum. It is open from 10 am to 5 pm and closed on mondays and public holidays.

4. Botanical garden:

Botanical garden is another great place to see in Pondicherry. It is located south of the new bus stand. Here you can see good collection of exotic and rare plants, shady trees, beautiful flowers and variety of flora. This place is great for nature lovers. Colorful musical fountain shows on weekends and holidays. It gives a wonderful experience for tourists. Plus they have 28 plots dividing the botanical garden and each one of them have a separate theme. Flower show is the most important event in the Botanical garden. Its happens yearly once at the 3rd or 4th week of feb. Flower show is for 3 days. It attracts many tourists.

5. Chunnambar beach: It is located in Ariyankuppam, 7 km from Pondicheery. There are plenty of things you can do in this beach including row boating, beach volley ball, trekking, fishing and swimming. This beach is great for swimmers, sports, kids and lovers. Main highlights of Chunnambar beach include Sunrise panorama, palm house and the nest bird. Boat ride is also available. Also they have slides, swings for kids.
