Kovalam Beach | Kerala India

Updated on April 30, 2011

Introduction

Kovalamis not a very old beach. Around thirty years back it was only a fishing village and was a reach source of fresh fishes. The villagers were also famous for producing fruits and ‘toddy’ a country liquor made from coconut. Today Kovalam is a famous beach attracting thousands of tourists every year. Entire credit for making Kovalam internationally famous goes to Maharaja Travancore. He is the man who brought this place to the public eye. Tremendous development has occurred during the last thirty years and now it is a prominent figure in the world tourism map. Today Kovalam beach is known as the Paradise of the South.

Salient features

Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees. And you would find this crescent shaped beach decorated with the evergreen coconut trees.

The beach has tree parts:

Samudra Beach

Light House Beach

Hawah Beach

Each one of the above has it’s own beauty.

Sea here is pacific and shallow. You can take a dip in the saline water or go to 100 meters deep without loosing the ground.

You can find Ayurvedic message center all around and indulge in a rejuvenating herbal, body-toning massage and holistic therapies.

But the most fascinating is the beehives activities of fishermen in the morning, which nobody would want to miss. I have seen tourists became so tempted that they couldn’t resist themselves from joining the fishermen in pulling the rope of their nets.

I personally spent a couple of hours in observing the activities of fishermen and took hundreds of photographs, a few of those I would share with you here. I bet you would certainly enjoy the scenes.

Environmental information

Temperature: Summer 30 – 35 oC, Winter 30 – 32 oC

Monsoons : start at the beginning of June, which lasts till the beginning of August. The second turn of monsoons in Kovalam start at the end of October and lasts for the next two weeks.

Best Time To Visit

September to March

How To reach

Kovalam is just 13 KM away from Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala, which is well connected by Air, rail and road.

Accommodation

There are a lot of good quality hotels are available around Kovalam, which can be booked through Internet. Below are some of the hotels I could remember now but you would find lot more. All the hotels are having good restaurants which offer a variety of food both in Indian and continental flavor. If you are not a strict vegetarian, don’t miss the taste of seafoods like lobsters, prawns and crabs.

Hotel Samudra-KTDC

Surya Samudra

Isola Di Cocco

Poovar Island Resort

Bright Resort

Now enjoy the photographs which I captured during my visit to Kovalam
