Travel To New London County

Updated on February 26, 2012

The Mystic Region Delights

Within the state of Connecticut there are 8 counties. Each of these counties has its own features, its own flair, its own topography and for that matter their own weather. In the southeast corner of the state is New London County. Having many towns located on Long Island Sound this part of the state tends to provide a cool springtime, warm summers and a spectacular fall season.

There are many fun activities, let's start at the; Essex Steam Train and Riverboat ride. This interesting combination of travel gives a wonderful perspective on the Connecticut River and the wildlife around it. The train ride by itself gives you that relaxed leisurely feeling of times gone by. If you enjoying going to the beach there is either Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme or Ocean Beach in New London. Of the two, Ocean Beach is a bit more commercialized with some amusement rides for the kids. In Niantic there is a wonderful boardwalk along the bay. With many benches for resting this is a wonderful spot to spend an hour or so. Also nearby is Harkness State Park. Although there is no swimming allowed at Harkness you'll still find a walk on the beach enjoyable, or there are vast areas there to picnic. Quite often you'll see weddings taking place there as the park provides some wonderful scenery. If you like to hike, then plan a trip to Bluff Point Coastal Reserve in Groton. From the parking area you can follow the trail to the ocean, although quite a bit shaded in the summer, fall provides a spectacular view of the leaf colors. Next travel to Mystic and go to Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium. After that in this old whaling town you can browse the shops, eat at a number of fine seafood restaurant and spend a leisurely day overlooking the water. Time in Mystic is time well spent. From there you can travel to the fishing village of Stonington. Cobblestone and one way streets give this small town its character. Shopping and dining are always fun here, as is a trip to the Lighthouse Museum. If your looking for summer fun-swimming-siteseeing-dining-walks-fishing then you'll certainly enjoy yourself here in New London County.
