The Silvermine Nature Reserve
The Silvermine River Wetland, part of the Silvermine Nature Reserve, is a rehabilitated floodplain between Clovelly and Fish Hoek. The entire reserve is a sanctuary accommodating over 50 bird species. striking insects, rare amphibians and indigenous vegetation. Shy mammals like the Cape Otter, 100-year old remains of dykes, distinct seaweeds, and the pristine Silvermine River contribute to the attraction of this nature reserve.
Silvermine Vlei & Valley
Part of the mountain range, which includes Table Mountain, is a peak overlooking Kalk Bay. It was named Trappieskop (steps hill) in early times when it was impossible to travel along the coast between Muizenberg and Simon’s Town. In places the mountains reached all the way down to the sea; travellers were compelled to cross these mountains the easiest way.
Trappieskop was a series of steep, zig-zag ledges, likened to stairs, that were adjusted enough to be used by animal drawn vehicles and pedestrians. This shortcut was originally called ‘the steps journey’, but as time passed, the area, including the mountain, became known as Trappieskop. Eventually explosives arrived in the country, which made the building of a more passable track along the coast possible.
Trappieskop, with its upper layers of high quality Table Mountain sandstone, offers several hiking trails for climbers of all ages. Already halfway up, the scenic views are breathtakingly beautiful. Rock climbers can get an idea HERE of the exciting challenges Trappieskop has in stock for them.
Our stroll on Trappieskop
When fellow-writers, Hubbers Nadine May and Robin Beck, invited us for a hike on Trappieskop, we had our doubts. We were still stiff and sore after climbing the famous Rock at The Paarl just the previous day. However, true to our adventurous personalities, we accepted the invitation. Although we didn't make it to the top, we strolled along on one of the lower trappies (steps) and enjoyed the climb, the wild spring flowers and the scenic views. Thanks to Nadine and Robin we will never again pass Clovelly without having an idea of its hidden treasures.
