Tregonny Castle Estate, Cornwall

Updated on August 27, 2013

Retired counselor, 341 short stories published by FSU. I have 4 sons, love sharing photography, writing, love travel, sunshine, sea & Grace.

Being British and living in Florida, I am back and forth to the UK. During a recent trip, my son Leigh decided that after 11 years he would return to UK - he was 15 years old last time he saw it.

He was also there to help me move a dear family friend from his home and into a care facility. Despite this, I really wanted my son to experience England's history and elegance and so I booked him into the Tregenny Castle Estate in St. Ives, Cornwall where we were staying.

The estate is set in 76 acres of magnificent gardens and views. Even though it was mid October, we were lucky enough to have a few days of great weather. The views over St. Ives Bay are outstanding, as are the gardens, golf course, outside swimming pool location and Gazebo garden.

Whilst the upstairs corridors and paintwork are tired and in need of a 'face-lift' the downstairs is lovely with a welcoming foyer and Chesterfield's for you to sit and catch up on your emails or just read a book or newspaper.

The stately dining rooms have large windows so (if your lucky and the weather is good) you sit in bright sunlight in the elegant room imagining that it is perhaps a century ago and you sit, sipping Earl Grey tea (in full Victorian finery), looking down over the gardens without a care in the world....Mmmm ; such is the ambiance it sparks the imagination and nourishes the soul.

Speaking of nourishment, the breakfasts are vast with a wide array of Continental and Full English fare.

You can also stay in the many self-catering units and large Swiss-chalet style cabins. These are beautiful... many of them are used as time-share.

The hotel boasts both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, two restaurants, bar and brassiere, conference rooms, full spa and gym and WiFi in the lobby, fabulous golf course with fantastic views and great walks around the huge estate, one of which leads down to St. Ives town center.

This place has captured my heart and I know I will go back and stay there.

      Hi JamaGenee

I hope your stay in Cornwall is in the early or late summer as you need to appreciate it in decent weather. The long-term rentals at Tregonny are lovely and I don't think you would regret your choice - have a wonderful trip and if I can help in any way let me know - check out my other hubs on St.Ives and the area as I have quite a few photos to give you more idea of the place...the weather can be disappointing, so I really hope you get lucky! Bon Voyage, :-) Helen

Having decided moving to St Ives permanently is out of the question and a year in different parts of England is more manageable, St Ives would be the base for the Cornwall part of the trip. Self-catering is the best option when staying in one area for an extended time, but I'd not yet gotten around to looking at SCs in SI. Can't help but think it's a "sign" that new comments on this hub popped up in my email box today. The fact that you only intended to stay 2 weeks and stayed for 7 tells me I have to look no further than Tregenna Castle! Thanks! ;D

Hi Husky1970 I am so glad you enjoyed the photos and finding out more about Cornwall. Actually, I made my first visit there in May of this year. I was scheduled to stay for 2 weeks and ended up staying there 7! It is a truly beautiful place and the ocean is as clear and turquoise as the Caribbean with beautiful countryside and old farms and manor houses... lots of twee fishing villages, art galleries and artists everywhere - and of course the famous Cornish pasty and Cornish Clotted Cream Teas. Bliss! :-)

Hi AliciaC Thank you for your comments. I think that St. Ives is one of those places that gets lodged in your heart and mind and stays there no matter how long its been since you last saw it - photos bring it all back to life again. Yes, I always enjoy being down there and although tinged with sadness, it is a very special place! :-)

I visited St. Ives when I was a child and loved the place. The Tregenna Castle Estate looks absolutely wonderful - I would love to stay there! Thank you so much for the photos. I hope that you enjoyed your holiday despite your friend's illness.

Terrific photos. What a fascinating place to visit. Ironically, I just read another hub about Corwall by Judi Bee. Cornwall was a place that I knew nothing about until today. Thanks so much for the information.

      Voted up and beautiful.

      Hi JamaGenee

It really is the most beautiful place. The views are stunning just about everywhere you turn and there is something about the light-play which makes it unique and why there are literally thousands of artists there and hundreds of art galleries. I love it! Thanks for stopping by and I really hope you get there one day - lottery or not!

St. Ives has long been the place I want to move to after I win the Lottery on this side of the Pond. Your photos just make me wish I was already there! ;D

Oh my absolutely breath taking, magnificent 76 acres of Heaven. You must have thoroughly enjoyed your stay with your son and I can just imagine him dropping his chin when he was gifted with this beauty.

Your pictures are worth a thousand words, I felt like I was there myself. It's on my bucket list for sure. The history as you say sitting and looking out over the bay 100 years ago, yes this is my idea of a vacation. Rated UP and awesome.
