Vermont State Symbols

Updated on February 5, 2014

What are Vermont's State Symbols?

Fourth Grade is the year when children in Vermont learn about our state and its symbols. The entire year may be devoted to learning about Vermont and how and why its symbols represent our state. When I was growing up in southern Vermont I looked forward to receiving the big green book with simple line drawings that I had seen older children use to gain information about our state symbols.

In this lens we will be exploring Vermont's symbols and looking for ways to make learning about them a fun, hands-on creative experience for children that will leave them proud and confident of their knowledge of our beautiful state.

Come visit and get to know the animals, plants and other symbols that represent the State of Vermont...

Vermont is known as the Green Mountain State. The Green Mountains run north and south up the middle of the state. Both the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail run through Vermont. Walking along the trails you may encounter the Vermont State Amphibian, the Leopard Frog, see the Vermont State Insect, the Monarch Butterfly, or pass through a field of Red Clover, the Vermont State Flower.

There are 14 counties in the State of Vermont.

Make a copy of the Map of the State of Vermont. Laminate it and cut it apart along the county lines for children to use as a puzzle.

When we were learning the Vermont State Symbols we created a checklist that we could check off as we saw each one. We visited Morgan Horses at a farm next door. We saw red clover in our field. A Leopard Frog hopped off a rock on a path we were walking on one day. We even got to milk a cow by hand. Learning the Vermont State Symbols was lots of fun.

I remember learning the Vermont State Symbols with my mom. She has great ideas for teaching. I am sure your children will love learning about them the way I did.

Nice lens! Of the six New England States, Vermont is the only one that I haven't visited; But hopefully I'll get to go there this Christmas if my daughter is relocated in Vermont.
