Vishakhapatnam: Goa of East Coast

Updated on April 2, 2015

Vizag Seaport

Who is unfamiliar to the third largest east coast city after Kolkata and Chennai, Vishakhapatnam? I don’t think there is someone. The biggest city of Andhra Pradesh, Vishakhapatnam, is also known as Vizag. It is also trendy by the names of City of Destiny and the Jewel of the East Coast. Known for its weighty industries, largest Indian sea port, oldest shipyard, and steel plant, the city is located on the east side of Bay of Bengal coasts and in the Eastern Ghats. Due to the beautiful sandy beaches and busy tourism, Vizag is also popular as “Goa of the East coast”. Moreover, there is one more name for this beautiful tourist destination known as Steel City.

Locally, Telgu is the regular language but because of the heavy number of immigrant workers who come looking for job opportunities in Steel industries, it has a mixed concentration of many other parts of India.

What are the prominent tourist places in Vizag? The answer is Beaches. I am not joking because the city’s chief major attraction is beaches and beaches, more than anything else. The fresh aura of cold water, touching your parts in a calm un-crowded environment takes you to the seventh heaven. Vizag has several quiet and sandy beaches to take a respite from your busy life. One of the most spectacular beaches is “Yarada”. Generally the visitors are unaware of this beach. Other than RTC buses, you can’t get any transport for here. A small fee of Rs. 30 gives you entry in the beach but after looking at the site, you will realize that it is worth thousand bucks. The Ramakrishna Beach or the R.K. Beach is considered as the most popular beach among locals. Moreover, on the weekends, the beach comes to life when whole of the shore is filled with people dressed in one of the best of their clothes, just sighting the beautiful immense sea. If we start, we can count over ten more beaches in the city. Other than beaches, few War Memorials, and some museums are favorites of visitors.

The Shopping, Food and Night Life

The city offers an immense selection of clothing, books, and jewelry stores. However, it is not rather a famous one in the terms of shopping, but you can still pick some nice gifts back home. Few popular stores are Chandana Brothers, R.K. Family Stores, Vaibhav Jewelers, kanaka Mahalakshmi, Bommana Brothers etc. Major malls of the city are CMS Shopping mall, Vizag Central Mall, CMR central Mall and M & M Mall.

While the beaches can astound you, the spicy tang of south Indian food can give a tremor to your mouth. Vizag has some of the finest South Indian restaurants of Andhra Pradesh. The names comprise Daspalla Executive Court, Hotel Green Park, Horizon, Eleven, Hotel Daspalla, Flying Spaghetti Monster and many others.

The nightlife of Vizag goes rather interesting with some awesome pubs. Chrome is considered as the best pub for having that party till the morning fun. The Xtreme Sports Bar, Marco Polo and Wood House are also flavors of nightlife in the Vizag city.

Ajshay, I visited this place while travelling to Kakinada about 5 years back. Unfortunately, I could not spend much time and it was too hot to go to any beach at that time. However, I enjoyed the road journey. Thanks for sharing.
