Visiting Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Updated on February 9, 2013

The Hole, in Wyoming;Jackson Hole that Is.

Now that is the place to go in the summer (go quickly its a short summer and it snows on the 4th of July routinely)

Seriously, my hubby, babies and I spent several summers in the hole and a more gorgeous spot would be hard to find. It is in the Rocky Mountains, hence all the joke about it being summer one day out of every year....brrrrr....but the days warm up and makes visiting the shops in the town and touring the park a very pleasant experience. Cody Wyoming is on the other end of Yellowstone so really there is so much to do it needs a chunk of your time to properly enjoy this spot in Wyoming.

Favorite Stops

The town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming is the seat of Teton County, Wyoming. It is surrounded by Grand Teton National Park, The National Elk Refuge and Yellowstone National Park. The Tetons are some of the most majestic mountain peaks in the Rockies.

Jackson Hole was founded by David Jackson, a fur trapper in the 1830's and the hole has been used as a rendezvous spot by people of all walks of life ever since. The fur trappers met there every summer to trade their furs, take their money and supplies and go back into the Tetons before the first snowfall. Now this spot is used by returning tourists who have fallen in love with the spot.

In Jackson Hole itself there is a square with several arches made of elk antlers. The Boy Scouts are given the task and the honour of gathering the dropped antlers in the refuge every fall. Words alone cannot describe the sight of these huge antlers locked together to form arched bridges along the path in the square.

Every afternoon in the summer there is a tourist attraction of a shootout at the Cowboy Bar that spills out into the square complete with cowboys and tangled arms and legs make a great show for the tourists and pride for the locals.

In the top of the mountain pass itself there is a famous restaurant called the Mangy Moose in Teton Village. It is part o several ski resorts dotted around the hole. The ski resorts are relatively new to Jackson Hole with the last one established in 1970. This is because getting inside the valley of Jackson Hole has always been difficult for most of the winter and at some points during the winter the pass through the Tetons are closed completely for everyone's safety due to snow and ice.

We visited here at a bed and breakfast one winter between Christmas and New Year's. I couldn't agree with you more. It is a beautiful place, and wondrous to behold blanketed in snow.
