Updated on July 24, 2011

The Perfect Picnic City

Otherwise known as Joyous Port or Happy Harbor, Porto Alegre is the perfect picnic city. It is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul which happens to be the most southern area of Brazil, very important culturally, economically and politically.

Porto Alegre is considered one of the wealthiest cities in Latin America and it is full of the most diversity. Many residents here come from Spain, Poland, Italy, Portugal and Germany, making it the perfect place to go if you enjoy being surrounded by different cultures.

What's so Great About Porto Alegre?

Porto Alegre is located where five large rivers marry together to create an enormous freshwater lagoon. This lagoon is big enough to comfortably accommodate the largest ships which makes the port a strong commercial center for Brazil.

The city is located in a sub tropical zone. It is very humid due to consistent precipitation but the sun still seems to shine, especially in the spring.

Porto Alegre is well-known for its enforced conservation program to protect the city's native forests. Mauricio Sirotsky Sobrinho Park offers a gaucho farm, 100 barbecue grills and an aero-modelling track while Farroupila Park has a solar retreat, mini zoo and bowling fields to explore.

There are 43 hectares of breathtaking gardens in Porte Alegre that has more than 725 plant species or if you really want to see some spectacular alternative vegetation, Lami Biological Reserve has a terrarium that shelters native saplings. There are plenty of animals and aquatic species to appreciate living in this swamp environment.

If you're into an electric nightlife like NYC or Las Vegas, Porto Alegre will satisfy. The city comes alive with music at night and there is certainly something for everyone. Of course, you need to eat while you re there and will all of the blended cultures, the cuisine gets an honorable mention for sure! Food is quite eclectic here so don't be surprised to be served up beans and rice alongside your favorite Italian or German dish!

If you are looking to visit an upscale city, full of natural beauty to explore during the day and a happening party to keep you busy at night, Porto Alegre is the place to go.
