If you are thinking of visiting Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, here are some quick tips that you need to know. This family winery is located between the state capital Madison and the recreation hub known as the Wisconsin Dells. It is an easy drive from I-90 / I-94 for travelers driving between the Twin Cities and Chicago. If you are in the area and want a different kind of stop with some old world charm, Wollersheim Winery is a nice retreat.

Wollersheim was purchased in 1972 by new owners Robert and JoAnn Wollersheim, from whom the winery gets its name. After much care and restoration, the winery began poduction and has since become home to award winning wines that are enjoyed throughout the area. Along the way, in 1990, Cedar Creek Winery was added to the family. Located about 100 miles due east of Wollersheim winery just north of Milwaukee, Cedar Creek shares the same winemaker with Wollersheim, but offers a unique selection.

Wollersheim Winery Business Hours

Visitors will find Wollersheim Winery open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day all year long with just a few exceptions. The winery is closed on New Year's Day and Christmas and closes early on New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve.

There is also a wine garden, where visitors may enjoy a glass of wine with a great view of the landscape. The hours for the wine garden are the same as for the winery but it is closed in winter or during poor weather.

A winery store is available during business hours and features the full selection of wines, including those from Cedar Creek Winery and other wine-related items. Visitors will also be delighted with a selection of pure Wisconsin award winning cheese - the perfect companion for a glass of fine wine.

Take the Wollersheim Winery Tour

One great way to spend some time at the winery is to take the guided tour. The property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a beautiful and historic site.

The tour begins with an informational and interesting video and then leads participants to a natural cave that once was the first wine cellar and even the home of the first family here. After the cave you will get to walk through the wine garden and see the fermentation room up close with another video detailing the process.

Another stop is to the old winery, where the limestone aging cellars are toured. Finally, visitors are treated with a wine tasting to sample several wines of the operation. In all, the tour takes about an hour and is a nice way to learn about the wine making process and, in particular, the history of Wollersheim Winery.

Free Wine Tasting at Wollersheim

Like other wineries, Wollersheim offers free wine tasting in the tasting room daily. Tasters must be 21 years old. Free wine tasting is offered for featured wines, which will vary throughout the year.

For a small additional fee, guests may choose to sample other sets of wine from the categories of red, white, or specialty wines. Or, the indecisive may choose to select them all.

Other Amenities

Wollersheim Winery is open to all ages and children are welcome, even with strollers, and strollers will be allowed on the trails and in the stores.

Those with handicapped needs will find special handicapped parking and elevators in the buildings to move between floors. Be aware, however, that the trail to the winery is about 400 feet uphill, so be sure to seek out the handicap parking spots for ease of access.

There are restrooms available accessible from both inside and out.

Wollersheim Winery is a welcome stop in central Wisconsin. It is family friendly and a nice way to see how wine is made up close and personal. The tour is interesting and visitors can get a great feel for all of the history of the site, from the old cave to the original winery. If you're in the area and considering a visit, don't hesitate.
