A prominent Montevideo landmark

Groundwork on Montevideo's Methodist Church — the Templo Metodista — commenced in 1903. The building which stands today was completed in 1913.

It is executed in Gothic style, with various features combining to reinforce this designation; these include numerous pointed window arches and doorways, and flying buttresses. A tower serves as a conspicuous landmark.

Its architects were Celso Bassignano y Norrone and Silvestre Soldini (1).

While the essence of Methodism historically revolved around simple prayer and Scripture reading, in an organized sense Methodism in Uruguay was recognized in 1878. The wish for a significant, permanent building as a focal point for Methodist activity in Montevideo thus developed in the subsequent years. (The first Methodist church building in Buenos Aires in neighbouring Argentina was inaugurated in 1843.)

The Templo Metodista is located at Constituyente and Javier Barrios Amorín, a Downtown location in Montevideo. The building is sometimes referred to as the Iglesia Metodista Central (Central Methodist Church).

Historically linked with the Methodist Church in Montevideo is the Crandon Institute (Spanish: Instituto Crandon), founded in 1879 by Cecilia Güelfi. Alumnae of the Institute include prominent business leader Patricia Damiani (from 2007, Second Lady of Uruguay through her marriage to Vice President of Uruguay 2005-2010 Rodolfo Nin Novoa); alumni include journalists Juan Carlos Scelza and Guillermo Lockhart.
