Volcano Winery Big Island Hawaii

Updated on April 6, 2010

Volcano Winery, Big Island Hawaii

The Big Island of Hawaii is not the typical place in the world where you would expect to find a vineyard. Located just outside of Volcano National Park the Volcano Winery is Americas southernmost winery. Some of  the worlds most unusual wine is produced here on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Volcano Winery specializes in creating tropical blends.

The symphony grape is used for the wineries dry and semi-dry wines. Local fruits such as guava are used to create unique blends such as Volcano Red, Volcano Blush and Hawaiian Guava wine. Volcano Winery also creates a lovely Mead wine which is made with 100% Macadamia  honey.

The Volcano Winery is located about 3 miles south of Volcano Village, off of Highway 11 between the 30 and 31 mile marker. Turn north on Pi'i Mauna drive. Follow Pi'i drive all the way to the end of the road and you will see the entrance to Volcano Winery. The winery is probably a little less than a mile down the road.

Be-careful because this area of the island is known for its wild pigs. More than once I have had a wild boar running alongside my car as I am driving on the side roads up near the Volcano National Park. The wild pigs will normally not harm you
but you would not want to hit one with your car they can weight over 200 pounds. After all they are Hawaiian pigs. You would expect them to be rather large. You may also seen baby piglets with their moms. They are known to be sort of mean,
so just use caution and respect when traveling any where on the Big Island of Hawaii.

If you are looking for a great adventure come to the Big Island of Hawaii and visit Volcano National Park. I have been to the park many times and I am always amazed at how it can change. The lower end of the park boasts an active volcanic eruption. You will want to drive to Kalapana to see the lava flow into the ocean. I also recommend that you experience the lava! Its worth the drive.

So you are unable to make it all the way to the Big Island at the moment. Not to worry!  Many places in the USA allow you to ship wine and the Volcano Winery has an online inventory with shipping prices.
