Wenchang Chicken

One of the 4 famous Hainan food dishes...

Authentic Wenchang Chicken (Wenchang Ji) is raised in Wenchang city. Chickens are kept in cages for about one month, and fed daily on banyan seed, sweet potatoes, coconut shreds, rice or peanut biscuits. On this diet the birds grow plump quickly, but are not fatty. The chicken is boiled and chopped into segments, resulting in meat which is tender with crisp skin and soft bones. Served with a dipping sauce of tea oil, ginger paste, salt, garlic and other spices, it is suitable to consume with a fine white wine and other dishes.

This may not be the authentic recipe (The fowl from Wenchang are specially raised for this dish) but it's very close to the real thing. You don't even have to spend much time carefully cutting the fowl into pieces, as the chef demonstrates. Try this recipe out. It will save you the airfare to Hainan!

The Song (Soong) family exerted an enormous influence on the history of modern China last century. In particular, the three sisters (Song Ailing, Song Meiling and Song Qingling) drew three historical giants into the family through marriage and family. These men were Kong Xiangxi, Chiang Kai Shek and Dr Sun Yat Sen.

Their presence "played the heart strings of millions of people and decided the political clouds of people under winds and storms"... Quotation from inside this museum - drs2biz

This ancestral home has been converted into a museum for the pleasure of people seeking an insight into the history of modern China.

Emily Hahn (1905 - 1997) was educated as a mining engineer. She worked variously for an engineering company in Illinois, as a travel guide in Mexico, for the Red Cross in the Belgian Congo, and as a writer for the "New Yorker".

Emily lived in China from 1935 to the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in 1941. She was introduced to the famous Soong sisters, when she lived in Shanghai, and eventually wrote this famous biography of them.

The Soong Sisters
The Soong Sisters

"These famous sisters were educated at Wesleyan College in the USA, and each of them married important men (Dr Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek and finance minister of China, H.H. Kung). By influencing their husbands' opinions, and also by their own actions, they each had a powerful influence on the history of China in the 20th Century. Inspirational reading". drs2biz

This temple in Wenchang City is dedicated to Confucius (Kong Zi, K'ung-fu-tzu or Kongfuzi), the ancient sage who still commands respect in China. Students and businessmen, in fact people from all walks of life, come here to offer prayers for inspiration and success.

This temple was constructed in the 11th Century and has been carefully restored and enlarged several times, notably since the end of the Ming Dynasty. The architecture is impressive and there are extensive features to look at. This is one of the best examples of a carefully preserved, ancient building complex in Hainan Province.

Wenchang Launch Centre is Coming Soon!

Because of Wenchang's proximity to the equator (19 degrees North), there can be a greater payload launched by rocket than from any of the other sites on the Chinese mainland. As a result, China's State Council and Central Military Commission finally gave the approval for construction of the Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre. Building has recently commenced and the first launch is expected in 2013. The official reason for building this site is to launch satellites, but there is much speculation that manned space launches (including a moon shot) will be not so far away!

The main launch complex will be built in an 30 square kilometres area in Dongjiao town and Longlou town, about 40 minutes by car from Wenchang. Wenchang local government is also planning to build a space theme park nearby, where tourists will be able to watch launches taking place. The theme park will include an aerospace museum, space flight simulators, and other items of interest.
