What Is Spaghetti Ice Cream (Hint: It's German)
When we told my three year old daughter that we were going to have Spaghetti Ice Cream, she was less than thrilled. "I just want ice cream, mom," she cried. Little did she know she was actually in for a delicious tasty treat.
When we were planning our trip to the upper-middle Rhine valley in Germany, I read about this unique dish and I knew I had to try it for myself. We were lucky enough to sample the dish at the Gelateria Milano in St. Goar.
So, what is Spaghetti Ice Cream, you ask. It's actually not spaghetti at all, but vanilla ice cream pressed through a grinder to look like spaghetti. The "pasta sauce" is delicious strawberry sauce. Finally, the "Parmesan cheese" is really just shaved white chocolate. Put it all together and you truly have a unique dish that is a site to behold.
As for the taste, well, it's nothing like spaghetti. It's just basic vanilla with strawberry sauce; nothing tremendous, but definitely satisfying on a warm afternoon. As you can see from the photo, we cleared our plate. My daughter did say that here Nana's mango gelato tasted better and I did agree. However, it's not every day that you get to try spaghetti ice cream. So, if you are ever lucky enough to be in St. Goar, Germany (and I hope you are), stop by the Gelateria Milano and order a bowl of spaghetti ice cream.
