Temperature Versus Humidity

Mobile is a semi-tropical climate and regularly ranks as the rainiest city in the United States. Unlike Seattle, we have lots of sunny days, but when it rains, we can get up to three inches of rainfall in one splashy deluge. The late summer of July and August has the rainiest months, but generally in the afternoon only. October is a glorious month with little rain and great weather, while April is springtime's best month, but can have a bit of winter's chill hang on. Generally, our winters are mild but can be cuttingly cold due to the area's humidity. This humidity is very wet and, depending on the moisture in the air, can be like walking into a steam room. It wreaks havoc on your hair, making it frizzy. We have around 3 weeks of fairly chilly weather, usually in January.

Mobile's Fashion Style

I will never forget one early June as I walked down an ancient cobblestone street in Venice, Italy. Back in my hometown of Mobile, Alabama, we had been sporting hot pinks, acid greens to herald springtime fashion homage since March. No one had apparently told Venetians that it was time to stop wearing black. I stuck out like a crazy person. I really enjoy fashion and that certainly doesn't change when I travel. So, you are traveling to Mobile for a trip. What do people wear there? The basic style philosophy of Mobilian women is very conservative, even at events like Mardi Gras or a cocktail party. Most fashionable women are not into bling here, but there is a huge exception for ruffles. Ruffles on sleeves and especially the neckline are a favorite for all ages.

What about the men? For men, the downtown is the epicenter for attorneys since there are several important regional courthouses. You'll definitely want to bring a blazer; during the summer, you would not be out of place in a seersucker suit. However, it's not cutesy pastel prep style happening here. Think of it as more conservative prep, dark colors, and QUIETLY standing out. Since Mobile has some of the best fishing in the nation, in their downtime, Mobile men wear a pastel colored Columbia fishing shirt and khaki shorts or pants. Mobile men have great hair and let it grow out a little longer; think of it as a frat cut.

What To Wear- Summer

In the summer, which is really June, July, August, and even September, it can be miserably hot for those unused to the heat. Again, it's not the heat, it's the humidity. Then, we have the frigid refrigerators that most hotels and shops become to contend with. It is possible to wear jeans, but it really doesn't cool off until around 7:30 p.m. A great option is to wear a skirt or a shirt dress. Shorts are also a good choice. You'll need a thin sweater to have handy. The paper thin ones will ball up and fit in your purse. While it is tempting to wear t-shirts and shorts, wouldn't you rather look stylish when you travel?

What To Wear-Winter

In the winter, the wind chill feels quite cold with the humidity added in so you'll want to avoid dresses or skirts, unless you have a dressy event. Many days, it may start out at 45 degrees and quickly warm to the low 70's, which will feel very warm in comparison. Don't bring a bulky jacket. You will actually be better off if you have a woman's blazer or very light jacket and layer. Boots are popular with Uggs being worn here by the younger set. The older than 30s set wear Frye boots and Tory Burch boots. Downtown seems warmer in some ways than even just a few miles away at I-65.

Mobile: Conservative Classy

In Mobile, we are a conservative, old port city dating from 1711 (current second location). I hope this guide helps you to blend in while feeling fashionable on your trip so you can enjoy all the restaurants, bars, and museums available. If you are staying in Downtown Mobile, which I suggest, you'll want to be at one of the luxurious hotels there like the Battle House Hotel and looking as chic as the other guests. Someone just asked you for directions? Congrats! You look like a stylish downtown local!

Please, Leave The T-Shirts To The Children

Typical t-shirt worn everywhere in the outer boroughs of Mobile. I wouldn't be caught dead in one, not because I'm not a fan, but because it's just not attractive dressing.
