Good Ol' Ronald McDonald

When you’ve been travelling for any great length of time there’s certain things that you miss about your home life. A Big Mac, fries and a coke may not be at the top of the list but there are many other ways in which the world’s favourite burger joint can make your day just a little bit more comfortable when you’ve been away for a long, long time. Chances are there's at least one McDonalds in whatever town you're in. Just ask someone, 'where is McDonalds?' and they'll point you to the nearest McDonalds on whatever street. Allow me to demonstrate some reasons below.

Clean western-style toilets with running water, mirror and hand soap

Doesn’t sound like much, does it? But seriously, have you ever used the public toilets in India, or Nepal, or China for that matter? Many of the less developed countries still prefer to use what we refer to as squat toilets (a hole in the floor). Some public toilets may be a nothing more than a trough that you’re expected to do number 1’s and 2’s into with zero privacy. Where there is a western toilet you’ll have to flush it yourself by filling a bucket of water and chucking it down the toilet. Don’t bank on there being clean water to wash your hands with and certainly don’t bank on soap. McDonalds in every country have modern, clean western-style toilets. Do McDonalds charge customers to use the toilets? Yes, in some places, or not a charge then you may have to ask for a key.

When the weather’s hot and there’s no escaping it; there’s no shade; there’s nowhere to go, there’s always a consistently cool, air-conditioned McDonald's where you can go and cool off for a while. Just order a coke and nurse it until you feel like leaving. Not all fastfood chains will have air conditioning in McDonalds you will also find cool which can be so good when the temperature outside is over one hundred degrees!

Reliable Free Wifi

There may be certain McDonald's somewhere in the world that don’t have free wifi – but I’ve yet to find one. Don’t bother paying to use an internet café, just take your laptop or tablet or whatever to McDonald's, get yourself a coke or something that you can take your time over and enjoy the free wifi.

McDonalds Menu

Of course I had to mention the McDonalds menu. Now, you don’t need to be a big lover of burgers from McDonalds to appreciate the inclusion of the food on this list. Believe me, I’m not a big eater of fast-food in general and there are few items on the McDonalds menu that I'd normally go for. However, even the most adventurous taste-tasters, those always looking to sample new delights, will occasionally have an off day where they just want something familiar. The McDonalds Menu is essentially beef burgers, chicken burgers, fries and ice cream. You know what you're getting, you know it'll taste like it always does and you probably already know what you like and don't like. I, like the next man, like to try new foods, but trust me when you’ve had 3 bad meals in a row and you’re starting to feel a little sick you want to guarantee that your next meal will at least be palatable. And that’s when you throw your hands up and get yourself off for a big mac, fries and a coke. Generally the price of McDonalds is reasonable around the world. Most McDoanlds prices will be equivalent to the price of a meal at other fastfood chains or at a cheap restaurant.

In many McDonalds you can even go in and read the days newspapers if you so desire but that really isn’t high in a travellers list of priorities. But alas, just bear in mind that this monster of a multi-national does help provide a level of comfort to travellers and back-packers all over the world.

If you're from the US Farkle you'll probably notice a difference in McDonalds food any time you're in Europe, or especially the UK. We have different rules (tighter rules) that food companies have to follow in the way they prepare and sell food.

I traveled to France last year and their McDonald's fries and food tasted different. People told me they offer healthier fries there-not sure though what they do exactly-

Great observation and that is also the reason why Starbucks are popular with travelers. Voted up and shared.
