Which Greek Ionian Island Should I Choose?

Updated on February 22, 2015

Out of this world beauty

It can be difficult deciding where to go on holiday. For idyllic sunny islands with beautiful scenery and gorgeous beaches, Greece is an excellent choice and can offer real value for money. The Ionian Islands, off the West Coast, are Mediterranean gems that are extremely popular with visiting tourists and for good reason. But which of these islands should you choose for your Greek holiday?

Corfu: We Highly recommend a visit to the Mathraki beach its out of this World with beautiful water.....

Corfu

For Brits who like a familiar home away from home feel, then Corfu, with its distinctly British tinge may appeal. It acquired this British feel due to its history as a protectorate of the realm in the 19th Century and also in large part due to its enduring popularity with British holidaymakers. It can be heaving in peak season, but the rugged and mountainous interior retains a timeless charm and is perfect for a hiking holiday.

Paxos/ Antipaxos

We highly recommend a visit to Voutoumi Beach

Paxos/ Antipaxos

These two islands were where people went to escape the coastal crowds of Corfu. The word has now well and truly spread though, and these small islands can also become extremely busy in peak season. August in particular is the month to avoid if you don't like hoards of people on every beach. The beaches though, are stunning. It is easy to see why so many people make the effort to get here to enjoy them.

Lefkada

Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a bridge, which makes it feel less like an island. Perhaps this is why it is less touristy? The beaches here are outstanding; some say they are the best in the Ionian. But they are not as crowded as some of the other islands so this is the place to come if you are looking for a slightly less busy beach holiday.

Ithaka

We highly recommend a hiking in Ithaka, which can reveal 360-degree views of the sea and surrounding islands

Ithaka

If you are looking for an active romantic hiking holiday with your loved one then this island could be a good choice. Though Ithaka does not have the sandy beaches of the other islands, correspondingly it has remained blissfully undeveloped. This islands mythic associations with Homer's Odyssey add to the romance.

Kefalonia

If you are a keen reader no doubt you have heard of the bestselling novel, 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'? Later, it was turned into a film. Kefalonia is the setting for that romantic weepy, its beautiful landscapes made famous due to that story's popularity. However, you will be glad to hear that the hoards have not descended. Though popular, it remains on the whole relatively sleepy and unspoiled.

Zakynthos

We highly recommend a visit to Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach)

Zakynthos

Zakynthos is a bit of a mixture. There is some heavy package tourism on stretches of the coast, but, like Corfu and elsewhere, the mountainous interior remains peaceful and isolated. On Zakynthos it is still possible to find isolated coves and escape the crowds.
