Wicker Picnic Basket

Updated on December 2, 2010

Today families usually use an Igloo brand ice chest to take on picnics, but the old-fashion wicker picnic baskets lend a theme to eating outdoors, and add characteristics of days past. When retrieving the picnic blanket and spreading it on the ground, and placing the basket on the checkered cloth it brings back memories of mom and dad taking us to the park and playing on the monkey bars and swing sets. Your mother would call you over to eat and everyone would sit happily around the blanket and enjoy some cold fried chicken, rolls, and mashed potatoes. For dessert, she would pull out her famous chocolate from the Tupperware, and we would enjoy the crisp spring weather, while we ate every bite.

Wicker Pinic Baskets Bring Back Great Memories

Today, things are fast paced and a picnic seems like it takes too much time away from normal activities. It is actually easier than you think, and preparing the night before, will have you ready to go at lunchtime on the following day. Just prepare all of your food the previous day and store it in the fridge. Get all the utensils, plates, and cups set out next to your wicker picnic basket, and have the blanket there folded and waiting to load in the basket.

The day of the picnic, simply load up all your food, and ancillary items that you are taking on your outdoor adventure. You might want to include some mosquito repellent, and sunscreen into your tote bag for good measure. It is also a good idea to bring along extra water, beside whatever beverage you plan on serving, in case the drinking fountains are out of order at the park. Load up your picnic basket, ice chest, and any sports gear you want to take with you and get the family in the mini-van.

At first, your family may balk at such an idea, as most kids are used to going to shopping malls, and eating in doors today. You can repeat this monthly or even more frequently to get them in a pattern of going on picnics. Then they will balk again when you cannot go one Saturday. This is a money saving outing, that will give you the quality time that all families need today with their busy schedules. A time to relax, create great memories, and just be with the ones that you love and cherish.

Do not forget to bring the camcorder and the digital camera to capture those memories, of Dad eating a slice of watermelon, or your son’s face being covered in your chocolate cake. When you have company over to your home, you can put on a slide show of recent outings and embarrass everyone with photos of their outdoor antics. You do not have to have a wicker picnic basket to have a great time, but again it sets a tone for the occasion.

I love old fashioned picnic baskets. You don't see them as often as you would like. I like the fact that you can use them for dual purposes and so many different things. I think people should go back to basics, that being the old fashioned ways.
