In Praise of Sailors

Writing songs and poems are my favorite past time and reflections of my stay in the vessel during sea voyages. Every thing that I see from the sky at night, the waves of the seas, the cries of the sea gulls and the presence of my co-seafarers and the homesickness that I feel are some of my inspirations to create a song or stanzas of poem relating my experiences onboard the ship.

At the Seaman's Center

Filipino seafarers often undergo apprenticeship at the seaman's center of a particular shipping company. Being the chief cook trainee of my batch in 1999, I juggled my stay at the center, marketing, cooking Filipino dishes and International cuisine, too for the owner and employees plus the trainees of the company. We have personality development programs to further enhance our other talents and skills (so that we will not be bored because of the long wait for the line-up to work on board ship).

My favorite poem that I also sang during one of the programs at the center was entitled "I Am A Sailor". It tells a story of a sailor's experiences during voyages.

I am a sailor navigating the Seven Seas;

meeting other people and enjoying the places I've been.

I am a sailor, fascinated by God's creations;

truly amazed by the stars that guide us in moonless nights

I AM A SAILOR A GREAT LOVER, SO THEY SAY

ADORED BY ATTRACTIVE WOMEN

ROMANCE IS THE GAME i PLAY.

I am a sailor always swept by loneliness

as the waves ripple its crests and troughs.

while my mind is longing for home.

I AM A SAILOR HELPING MY COUNTRY PROSPER

JUST LIKE OTHER OVERSEAS WORKERS,

SACRIFICING MY TIME AND EFFORT;

FOR THE SAKE OF MY FAMILY.

There you go. I didn't upload the song version of it in YouTube, but I had another written poem that I made into a song. I composed this on 2002 while onboard a container vessel. This is my first song to be uploaded in YouTube with footages of Panama Canal (a raw video showing our captain at the right wing of the bridge. The succeeding photos are my personal; shots of the places we've reached so far during my contract (the ship was a liner in the East coast of USA and South American countries). The uploaded video is entitled "A New Beginning" with me singing. Included in the music video were my second cook and steward (I was promoted as chief cook after three months in the vessel).

The lyrics are simple and the music is raw. I played the guitar, and sang it with all my heart. I included the lyrics in the video so that you can sing it, too, if you happen to see this hub,

A New Beginning

      Thanks for appreciating my effort, Ms. Dora. You really are an awesome hubber and best supporter among other hubbers, like me. :)

      Sailor, you're also a good singer and songwriter. Thanks for showing the many positive sides of a sailor. You're an honor to the profession. Keep the faith!

      This is a positive way to use your idle hours on board ship.
