Zip Code 96022: Lake California, Cottonwood, California

Updated on July 9, 2011

Try googling Cottonwood, Calif. You end up with conflicting responses. Seems Google cannot decide where it is. Zip code 96022 is for Cottonwood, Calif. It is north of Red Bluff, along Interstate 5 but south of Redding and within one hour of Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta.

Cottonwood is known for its cottonwood trees that line the Sacramento River. These mesquite type tree are called this for a reason: they shed cotton-like fuzzies that seem to be endlessly floating around like a Disney fairy. You either like them or hate them. When they gather in places, they create the illusion of some sort of disgusting soap pollution because it is white in appearance.

About ten minutes east of the town, along Lake California Drive, there is a small private community called, Lake California. About 800 live there permanently, another 1000 periodically, with summer being the most populated. Lake California is on a water. Nearly all the private homes have water as their yards. Some have fantastic vistas. The place is literally in the middle of a cow pasture in the middle of nowhere. Ahh, just the place to unwind and relax. Lake California is excellent for bass and steelhead fishing, both in the lake and the adjacent Sacramento River. It is also perfect for swimming, wind surfing and kayaking. Many homes are available for rent by the week via RE agents. They also have a large pool, jacuzzi, tennis courts, playground, and basketball courts at the clubhouse.

Back in 1968, it was a cattle ranch. A developer bought the land, created a large lake and sold lots and homes. They even have their own air field for small aircraft. The community is a mix of retirees and commuters. Homes range from $125-175,000. They can easily be used as a permanent residence. While you are in the middle of nowhere, you are not. Anderson, is only 15 minutes and decent size. Redding, with 90,000, offers just about anything you might need. It is only 20 minutes.

If you are in need of some real down time from your frantic world, Lake California will satisfy the need. The pace is very slow yet you are still connected to the world.

yes, since it is near Redding, we had 95-105F daily and 70F at night. Because lake calif is private, there is an entrance to it.

I don't get North very often...must be hot there but it sounds like the Lake is available to cool off. I will let my brother know about the fishing. Thanks for sharing.
