Ethiopian Calender

Have you ever heard about the 13th month? Or Do you a country with its own Calendar of 13 months. Ethiopia is probably the only country with it's own calendar different from the rest of the world. It is 7 years and 10 days late as compared to the Gregorian calendar. You know why? The answer goes back to the time of the birth of Jesus Christ our Lord. About a thousand years ago, Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, Israel. Many people believe that it takes about 7 years for the news of the birth of Jesus Christ to reach into the Ethiopian Kingdom.

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Ethiopian calendar has 13 months. The calendar starts at 11thor 12th September, locally known as 'Meskerem', which is the start of a new year and the year ends in between September 5th- 10th locally known as 'Puagme'. The first 12 months of the year are all 30 days, which are called 'Meskerem', 'Tikimit', 'Hidar', 'Tahsas', 'Tir','Yekatit', 'Megabit', 'Meyazia', 'Ginbot', 'Sene', 'Hamle' and 'Nehase'. The 13th month of the year is probably unique, it is only 5 days, it becomes 6 days once in every 4 years. This goes in line with the scientific definition of a year, which is 365 ¼ days. This month is called 'Puagme' and it is known to be "the unpaid month" of the year by civil servants of the country.

Generally as the country is located in the middle of the equator, the country gets sufficient sunlight more or less the whole year. In Ethiopia, there is no so called 'snow' or 'summer house'. So, that it is why, Ethiopia is called to be the only country with "13 months of sunshine".

Fascinating! I had no idea Ethiopia had its own calendar. It's a good thing the 13th month is short since it is an unpaid one for civil servants!
