A Nature History Travel Through Wild Lands Western PA__The Last Empty Places By Peter Stark

Updated on January 25, 2013

Before America Began Wilderness Pennsylvania

Stark begins his Pennsylvania Wilderness travel saga on Pre American Revolution pages of Colonial era history.

The war with the Native American tribes in Pennsylvania escalated when John Bartram (1699-1755) lived in Philadelphia. Bertram was a contemporary and friend of Ben Franklin (1706-1790).

In fact, in this Pennsylvania Wilderness saga, where Bartram is Stark's major hero, Stark tells us that Bertram was a member of Franklin's famous Junto Club. Bartram and Franklin conversed often on such topics of common interest as science, natural philosophy, wisdom and family matters.

From this historical introduction, Stark takes in Pennsylvania Wilderness journey following an obscure but well researched documentation on the trail of a Delaware Indian band who had kidnapped two young girls from a pioneer English Settlement, to describe the life and death struggle in midst of on going war that included mindless atrocity, cruelty and death.

For me, Stark'superb story telling and well researched historical tale on such elements of early America is not really fun reading. I chose to skip over pages of such historical events while finding meaning in beauty, passion and the links to great minds pursuing truth in nature through this early beginning of science and philosophy rooted in nature, in pre-Thoreau times.

Yes, good and evil struggle in nature as we know, as much as in men's hearts shaped by genes and culture, in that 300 year history of America since the time of John Bertram and Ben Franklin.
