af Chapman - youth hostel in Stockholm

Updated on April 17, 2014

Do you like to sleep on board?

af Chapman is a steel full-rigged ship moored on the western shore of the islet Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, Sweden, now serving as a youth hostel.

After a major renovation the beautiful ship is back in Stockholm. Here is Restaurant and Coffee shop with a wonderful view over Stockholm.

Adress: Flaggmansvägen 8, 111 49 Stockholm

E-mail: chapman@stfturist.se

As in all Youth Hostels in Sweden you can bring your own sheets and towels and do your own cleaning up. If you want to pay for these things you usually can but not always.

Her real name was Dunboyne.

af Chapman was her constructor

Located on the shore next to the Admiralty House, the ship was built in the UK in 1888 and originally known as Dunboyne. On its arrival to Sweden in 1915 it was renamed G D Kennedy and when the Navy bought it in 1923 it was given its present name after the shipbuilder and Vice Admiral Fredrik Henrik af Chapman (1721-1808). The Navy used it as a training ship and as such it made several trips around the world before serving as a barracks during WW2.

The Stockholm City Museum saved it from being broken up in 1947 and since 1949 it is administrated by the Svenska Turistföreningen (STF, Swedish Tourist Association) and serves as a youth hostel with 285 beds. During 2008 the ship underwent a comprehensive restoration, which was completed on April 9th. While the ship was being worked on in a drydock, the adjacent youth hostel Skeppsholmen remained open. Usually, af Chapman and Skeppsholmen - not to be confused with the islet of the same name, on which both are situated - are administered as a single hostel, with af Chapman offering somewhat more extraordinary accommodation and Skeppsholmen housing the reception, a kitchen for guests, and other facilities.

The Vasa Museum - This old ship is very well preserved

It sunk on her first trip August 1628. After sitting on the bottom of the sea for over 300 years the ship was brought up to the surface again. We built a house around her and all the interesting items found aboard is also here.

The air has to be constant moist in order for the old lady to stay intact. Read about it here and visit the museum when you come to Stockholm

Some facts about Stockholm

The view from af Chapman

Stockholm first appears in historical records in letters written by Birger jarl and King Valdemar dated 1252.

Stockholm photos and film - In a few minutes you will see so much

I lived in Stockholm for many years and I can tell you - this video cover most of what you will see there.

Take a bike and make a hike

Stockholms new public transportation this summer

Jacob Hessle has started a company with bicycle cabs in Stockholm. Totally 7 bicycles will be rolling away this summer. A 15 minutes tour will cost 40 SKR (US$ 6 roughly). The bikes will of course be peddled by a person with lots of leg muscles. It has 21 gears and is very easy to drive. If it is hard when uphills, there is a small motor that can be added.

Planting fish to be caught by us!

A sign that spring is here is when the fish babies are poured out in the waters around central Stockholm. 10 000 Salmon fish fry were planted today. You can acually stand on the bridges in Stockholm and fish them later. For 25 years this has been the custom in Stockholm. They will swim on and go elsewhere but will always come back for spawning-ground.

Next week there will be more fishes released in the streams of Stockholm. This time it is trouts.

Stadshuset

Open for visitors

The City Hall of Stockholm is one of the most beautiful buildings. Here are the celebration of the Nobel Festivities every year 10th of December

STF - The Swedish Tourist Association

Some facts

STF is one of Sweden's largest voluntary organisations, with about 330 000 members. It operates 315 youth hostels, eight mountain stations, and about 40 mountain huts in remote countryside.

Sweden has 25 provinces. Each of them has its own special character, culture and traditions. The country's landscape is highly varied, which is not surprising, given its 2,000 km (1,240 miles) length from north to south. Skåne in the south is flat and fertile, Småland is a region of deep forests, and Bohuslän in the west has a rocky coastline. In the east Södermanland and Uppland share a unique archipelago, while further north are the region of Dalarna with its delightful Lake Siljan, the gentle mountains of Jämtland and the high peaks of Lapland. Sweden's highest mountain is Kebnekaise, 2,117 metres (6,950 ft) above sea level. Welcome to Sweden!
