   I have never been to Jamaica.  Things should be cheap since the people are still poor on the Island.

   I have been to Jamaica, traveled from north to south, east to west.  I found that the towns that have tourism were as expensive as any major US city.  There were smaller towns where things were cheaper and some nasty neighborhoods in Kingston where things were cheaper, but for the most part the island is not one of the ones which has a remarkably lower cost of living unless you are willing to accept a remarkably lower standard of living along with it.
   
   Better options would be Cuba or Dominican Republic, both of which has a very low cost of living.

   Been to Jamiaca twice,and getting ready to go again soon. Like any other island almost everything has to be imported, so some certain things can cost more. Island made products, handicraft items, necklaces, cravings, artwork and shells can be bartered for and are a good deal. Most of the people are friendly and are eager to please, especially at the resort areas. Eating out can be expensive if you're in a mood for steak. But if you like Jerk Chicken, or fresh fish there are bargins to be found.

   If you are thinking US dollars, you can buy a bottle of soda or a bun or a pack of nuts.
   
   Jamaica is an economically challenged country and as some has already mentioned depending on where you go prices on items may differ. In the more commercial or tourist areas items will cost more due to market and profit factors. However outside of the commercial district prices on items will fall but not by any significant margin e.g. a meal at KFC will cost approximately 6$ US. Take a 100.00$ US to the supermarket for a month worth  shopping, while you may not be able to cook gourmet style, you won't go hungry and can still have simple and decent meals.
