I took a class a while back on the health of the US as a nation and why obesity is such a problem. My professor had said it is the fact that poor people are fat because they can't afford healthy foods.
That to me is the most ignorant statement anyone could ever say. I'm sorry but I believe obesity is caused by people not being educated in healthy food and healthy living, it is also by people being lazy. I never was traditionally taught in any which way on how to eat healthy, I think the only thing I knew was to not eat fast food on a regular basis. Either way, if you read and you learn about how to eat healthy, it's actually quite simple and is probably less expensive than your Big Mac that your clogging your arteries with.
Rice and beans are very cheap and relatively healthy solutions. It is a filling meal which includes most of the nutrients one needs for energy yet not much fat at all. Black beans include protein and are usually at most $1 a can. You can easily feed a family of 4 with $10 worth of rice and beans. Add in a little bit of onions peppers and chicken and you're set. Chicken is one of the cheaper meats but also is actually one of the better meats for you.
America needs to stop being so lazy and crunched for time and take time to cook a decent meal that won't kill you by clogging up your arteries.
