Is it safe to travel to Mexico?

I have heard that you can get arrested on trumped up charges and then you are treated badly and then put in jail where your family has to pay a lot of money to provide you with a cell and food.

I think it depends on where you go. I was in Cancun a year ago. I went to the beach at 5 am to take photos of the sunrise and was surprised to see security guards on duty at the beach of my resort.

There's no place that is safe to any stranger the best thing you can do is to stay aware and alert. Mexico is a great place to visit with.

Living in a plastic bubble is safe untill you get cancer. I traveled to Mexico in the height of the "drug war" and Swin Flu. I woke up the next day without stab wounds and never got sick. I only had a major hangover from all the Tequilla. 2 for 1 double shots get you.  Just make sure you dont forget your passcard or your passport and your fine. ...

Dont drink the water or ice cubes
you might get the mudd runs.

I think it matters a whole lot on where in the country you'll be, and what you'll be doing.
Follow the news and you'll see the same locations being identified as the sites of the worst of the drug-trade violence and police corruption.
But if you keep alert, and make sure folks stateside know where you're going to be, and stay away from the worst areas you can actually score some really good deals, and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Well, if you follow the news, SteveoMc, which I'm sure you do, you know its no joke down there. Its not a "failed state" or anything like that.

But guns are flowing from here down there. Drug cartels are fighting with one another for control of distribution routes for their product into the United States, to feed the demand.

If you do go down there, you don't have to be paranoid, but just be sensible, stay with your tour group, and all that. Be safe!

You will never know till you visit.
The police only attack you if you deserve it. Very few will antagonize inocent people. Mexico is like many other countries, there will always be place you should avoid.
The news has no idea what goes on with situations in other contries like this, its all speculation. It's amusing actually... as if cartels were best of friend untill recently. None of this is news.
Mexico is a beautiful country with every kind of senery you could possibly want yo see. From snow, to desert, to mountins, to jungles, to beaches. If you go enjoy, and if you like ask where to go and where not to, Im sure you'll be helped.

Go to Playa Del carmen. People that go there call it a PARADISE, It is heaven on earth. Extremely safe and the ocean in hypnotizing. It is about one hour away from Cancun airport. I lived there for almost two years and it was the greatest time of my life.
