MacQuarie Island in the sub-Antarctic. I was there as an expeditioner for a full year from October 1976 to October 1977. I knew it would be fascinating. But what I experienced there was almost beyond description. Imagine steaming slowly towards the shore to be met by thousans of penguins swimming, diving, playing around the ship as it came in. MacQuarie has three million - yes 3 million! - penguins, 18,000 elephant seals. It has fur seals, leapard seals, albatross, hundreds of thousand of different types of sea birds. If you look at some of my hubs you'll see a few pictures of the place.
