Autumn Trees and Leaves in Gatineau Park

Updated on September 15, 2014

Fall In Gatineau Park

Gatineau Park is my favourite place to spend time in any season, but the park is gorgeous during fall. The colors are stunning, all the leaves turn orange, red and yellow. The park is actually pretty famous, and people come here from Toronto to see the fall foliage. The park is actually full starting from springtime, the last Saturday in May to Thanksgiving Monday. But it is in the Fall when the park is just jam packed with people, some attracted by the gorgeous Fall foliage view, some trying to make something out of the last warm days before the park closes to the public.

Autumn Foliage - A Symphony of Colors

I love this time of year when the leaves change. If you live in a place where people are still burning woods for heating, this is when you start smelling the fire in the old stoves. This is the best time to walk on the streets and just watch the nature, and relax. For me, it is a strange feeling, it relaxes me but at the same time is exciting, because of the lively, warm colors. I always need to take a few deep breaths to relax, otherwise the joy of so many beautiful colors is overwhelming.I normally wouldn't like Autumn, it's the end of summer, and announces a few months of cold. This is especially depressing here in Ottawa, where we have long winters. However, the symphony of colors and the abundance of produce makes up for everything else.

This picture is taken from the Champlain Lookout, in the Gatineau park, which is one of the greatest places to look at the Gatineau hills. The Champlain Lookout is 335 metres above the sea level, and when you drive there you might even sense the pressure changing. You know how your ears feel like they are blocked when the altitude changes. The view from this lookout is stunning in any season not only in fall, and if you like to hike there are a couple of options from this location. If you like both the fall foliage and hiking this is a great place to take your camera with you and do one of the trails.

This picture was taken with my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone, which I always carry with me. This way I don't have to carry both a phone and a camera. Obviously, a semi professional camera is the best option if you are a photography geek.

Early Fall in My Neighborhood - Fall Orange Maple Tree

This is a tree in my neighborhood, and since the picture was taken in early fall, the tree is still orange. In fact, the maple tree is the one with the most beautiful and diverse color. The color can range from yellow, to orange, red, pink, and purple. The different varieties of maple lose their green at different times, and by the time some maple trees will turn red, other would already lost their leafs.

When Are The Maple Trees Changing Color in Gatineau Park?

Well this is different every year, in 2013 was late, this year, in 2014 will be very soon. So if you are coming from Montreal, or Toronto, you better come sooner than other years.

I think we can see a full color change with green completely disappeared in late September, which is going to be very soon.

Autumn is my favorite season of the year, due to its changing leaves and cool weather. It's so beautiful being surrounded with fall colors.

@shellys-space: Not the case anymore, but In Europe most of the weddings are held in September, because of the produce abundance, and the new wine season.

Although I dread the coming of yet another Canadian winter, as you do, I absolutely love the Autumn for its fall foliage and crisp fresh air. Can't think of anything better to do on a September or October day than to go for a long hike as far away from humans as humanly possible! :)

I once went to Michigan, arrived in early October and was astounded a the incredible bright beautiful colors of the trees. In Southern California trees don't get that spectacular in the fall.

I would love to visit that park, or to fly over it. Can't believe the quality of photographs you can get with a cell phone.

@tomoxby: I tried a bicycle ride in the park, but too hilly for me. I do hike though, I tried many of the trails.

I love cycling through Gatineau Park, a little hilly but the scenery is worth it.
