Historic Beaufort

On a recent trip south we took a side trip to the beautiful town of Beaufort, South Carolina to meet up with some friends. We stayed at the cottage of the Rhett House Inn, a delightful Bed&Breakfast just a couple of blocks from the historic downtown area.

We found the town of Beaufort to be a charming southern town, with streets lined with spanish moss covered live oak trees. We walked to the historic downtown area and enjoyed the shops and the friendly people. The downtown area is just across from the waterfront, where there is a lovely park and a nice variety of restaurants overlooking the water.

In this lens, I will share some of my photographs of our stay and also some of the links I used in planning our getaway.

St. Helena's Episcopal Church - historic church

This historic church was first opened in 1724. During the civil war the church was used as a hospital and some of the tombstones were used as operating tables.

This church was just across the street from the Rhett House Cottage where we were staying. it is surrounded by a fascinating old brick wall and inside the wall and all around the church is the cemetery. There are many tombstones from the Civil War era.

This photo was taken inside the brick wall surrounding the church.

Beaufort Waterfront

shops, restaurants, and relaxation

The Beaufort waterfront was a wonderful place to take a stroll or just sit in some of the big wooden swings and enjoy the peace and beauty of the water.

Beaufort South Carolina - waterfront park

The waterfront park is beautifully landscaped and has many benches and wooden swings to sit and relax. On the one side is the water and on the other side the park adjoins the restaurants where on a nice evening you can sit outside and enjoy of variety of good southern cooking and seafood.

We go to Hilton Head most every year, but went to Fripp Island for two recent trips where we spent time in Beaufort. It is a beautiful place and I have two classmates from The Citadel who are writers who have a residence there... John Warley and Pat Conroy. John is in the process of writing a historical novel about Beaufort now. My last trip there was during the Water Festival which is their biggest annual event and well worth attending. I made myself a promise to arrange a camping trip to Hunting Island in the fall when the temperature was cooling. It's a wonderful example of accessible coastal wilderness with lots of wildlife and beauty. Very nice lens!

Beaufort is a lovely town but then we think the whole state of South Carolina is lovely. You will have to come to Pendleton in the upstate on your next trip South. We don't have any lighthouses but we do have a Widow's Walk and it is said that it was one of the first built not on the coast.

The old bed and breakfast in Beaufort South Carolina is gorgeous. It is amazing how large and majestic the old mansions were. They must have really been chilly in the winter before electricity came along.

Lovely pictures and history tour of Beaufort, SC. I've been to ... and through ... Beaufort more times than I can count. Spent 3 years living in North Augusta, SC from which we spent as many weekends as possible camping at Hunting Island State Park and/or visiting friends on Fripp Island, both reached by going first through Beaufort! Then spent another 13 years living on Tybee Island, GA, only a bit of an hour away from Beaufort, SC, and traveled up there frequently. Love Beaufort - almost moved there once :-). Enjoyed your tour!

We've only driven through the historic part on our way to camp on Hunting Island. I have been to the lighthouse and out to Fripp Inlet down the way a little. I've always wanted to go in the Rhett House. Your photos are simply beautiful.
