My Favorite Mexican Food

Each time one of my friends goes to New York City, I want to give all kinds of advice on what to do and where to eat.

I live in Southwest Missouri, but I am the ultimate New York City tourist.

For the past 20 summers, I have been going to New York City to visit my brother. In that time, I have chosen my favorite things to do and my favorite places to eat.

My brother knows Mexican food is at the top of my list of favorites so during my first trip, he took me to Benny's Burritos on Greenwich Avenue.

I instantly fell in love with the food, the atmosphere, and the service.

I must say, it is not only the best Mexican food in New York City, but the best I have ever had.

Getting to Benny's Burritos in Greenwich Village

At the time of my first visit to New York City, my brother lived on the edge of Greenwich Village at the corner of 6th Avenue (also known as the Avenue of the Americas) and 12th Street.

One afternoon, my brother and I had been walking around seeing the sights that were all new to me (shopping on 14th Street, Union Square, The Strand Bookstore, Washington Square - all in walking distance from his apartment).

I found NYC is very easy to get around in because the main body of Manhattan is sectioned off into a grid. You are either going north, south, east, or west. It is very easy to get your bearings by just looking at the sun or by noticing which direction the traffic is going. If you go to sides of of the grid, if you reach a river (either the East River or the Hudson River), turn around and walk back to the center grid. Just play it cool like you know what you are doing.

As we walked south down 7th Avenue, he said, “Kid, I know the perfect place for us to get a bite to eat.” We got to Greenwich Avenue and took a right. Little did I know I was getting ready to start a tradition that would last for the next 20 years and beyond. Thus, I was introduced to Benny’s Burritos.

Why Benny's Burritos is the Best in NYC

As we walked through the door, I immediately loved the homey, clean atmosphere. The walls were dark green with various Mexican themed pictures and paintings. It was not very busy and the smiling hostess told us we could sit where we wanted and gave us our menus. We chose a seat next to the window so I could see outside. When you visit New York, you do not want to miss a thing. Most of the seats at Benny's on Greenwich Avenue have a great view. Granted, it is just another New York street, but there is always something new to see.

Next, our waitress brought us the traditional chips and salsa and asked if we were ready for her to take our order. I was not. The selection was so varied; I wanted time to pour over it. My brother, on the other hand, was ready to order and decided to help me with my selection. I am glad he did.

I am not a vegetarian, but I could honestly take or leave beef or chicken. My brother, knowing this, suggested the Mini-Quesadilla Grande with the House Salad and extra Guacamole.

I found my new favorite Mexican dish. The skillet browned Quesadilla was filled with melted Monterrey Jack cheese, black beans, Spanish rice, sour cream, lettuce; beautiful, plump, red chunks of tomatoes, guacamole, and select spices, especially cilantro. My favorite mixture of flavors.

Loving all these ingredients, I always order extra sour cream, pickled jalapenos, and guacamole on the side. The Mini-Quesadilla also comes with a side salad with the dressing of your choice. It is all heavenly.

Benny's Burrito Services

Before going to New York, I believe it got a bad rap for rudeness. I love New York, and the people have always been friendly when I have needed directions or had a question. Eating at Benny's has provided many wonderful memories for me. So much so that I have to go eat there every year.

I have never had anything but friendly service at Benny's Burritos. I am "sometimes" a needy customer (I know, all you people who have worked or do work in the restaurant industry are groaning - sorry). I like to ask for extras that may or may not seem relevant with my food and drinks.

At Benny's, it seemed liked they jump through hoops to make their customers happy. I have never been give a reason to complain.

Also, I discovered Benny's Burritos delivers. Don't think I don't have that number programmed into my phone - (212) 633-9210 -even if it is just one week out of the a year. We eat in the restaurant once, and we or I have it delivered at least once - you only need a minimum $8 order - SWEET. The delivery service is fast and friendly.

Either way, eating in the restaurant or calling out for delivery, the price is right. One might think a lot of money would have to be spent to eat out in New York City, but not at Benny's. It has many reasonably priced dishes and selections on the menu for you to enjoy.

Go in, find a seat, order your favorite Mexican dish and a margarita. My New York visits are not complete without a trip to Benny's Burritos.

New York City Tourist Tip

When you go to New York City, bring along a pair of good walking shoes because you will be walking a lot. Not being a real New Yorker, I would not dare try to drive.

Get a map and realize that much of New York City is built on a grid. If you go too far east you will run into the East River. If you go too far west, you will hit the Hudson River. New York City is very easy to get around in.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. New Yorkers may be in a hurry, but I rarely run into anyone who is rude or dismissive. You just need to keep up with them until you get the information you need.

I have visited NYC so many times that I enjoy this guide that takes me beyond the typical NYC tourists destinations.
