A Look At Central Park in Autumn

Image credit: Daydreamers, Deborah Julian Art

What does autumn in New York look like? Fall In Central Park photos can seem so rich that they're like abstract paintings. Spirits saturate the rolling meadows, the placid pools, winding trails and brilliantly colored clusters of tall trees.

The leaves have changed. Subtle shifts in color and light take place. There are many fewer tourists.

Tourists and vacationers are a vital part of life in Manhattan and Central Park, but in this season, the people you bump into are more likely locals. But chances are, especially in less urban spaces, like Central Park, you might not bump into anyone.

Autumn in Central Park photos are beautiful in ways that contrast with all the energetic images of the rest of Manhattan. You turn and a flash of color floods your field of vision. All the other jazzy things, shopping and dining and museums, are right close by, when you are ready to go back.

People's Park

Everyone's A Critic is a typical New York scene, captured at a perfect moment. New Yorkers are filling the park on a sunny day, the leaves rich with color. But what makes it so New York is the people.

Look at the girls walking with their fathers. Each makes a disapproving face as she sees the live statue posing as an (I think) butterfly. Then, it's over in a flash.

As Far Away From Wall Street As You Can Get and Still Be In New York

Taking beautiful pictures of Central Park at its autumn peak is easy. Not a professional at all, I took this one myself, looking across the pond at the south end of the park, just fifty feet from 59th Street and The Plaza.

As many times as I've been able to walk through Central Park, any time of year, I'm still surprised to have such beautiful scenes in the middle of New York.

New Yorkers have a lot of dogs, and many of them hit Central Park for long walks on weekend afternoons.

As for this group, not looking alike doesn't prevent their being equally cute.

A Quick Overview of Central Park in New York City

Placed squarely on prime real estate in Manhattan before the city had a clear idea of how valuable the property would be, Central Park stretches from 59th Street to 110th Street, bordered east and west by 5th Avenue and Central Park West, which would normally be 8th Avenue coming north from Columbus Circle.

The only urban intrusion on the park is street auto traffic that is banned at most times, totally on weekends, and the sunken transverses that allow traffic across town without actually touching the park surface.

While there are few dining options, vendors with carts ply the pathways with cheap foods and beverages. And, many restaurants align the park on adjacent streets. The Metropolitan Museum sits within the park, although it's entrances are outside on 5th Avenue. There skating rinks, including the famous Wollman, near the south end that doubles as a small carnival in the summer.

@esmonaco: There are lots of easy bus trips, Eugene. My brother, from upstate, used to do that a few times a year. Let someone else do the driving.Having spent two decades in Western New York, I know you have plenty to enjoy where you are. But a little bit of NYC should be one of your indulgences one day.

@ecogranny: You're welcome, Grace. It's a continuing wonder how Central Park secures its place between all the concrete and glass.

We live in Western NY, and have always wanted to make the trip to New York City, but have not done so yet. Some day we'll get there, but in the meantime thanks for the tour and wonderful pictures!

I did indeed. Central Park is lovely. Who could imagine, looking at these photographs and knowing nothing else, that just a short way, a humongous city bustles. Thank you for the interlude. I needed that this afternoon.

@Brite-Ideas: I guess Toronto's a town with a lot of faces. Some of them surprise us.Your mayor seems to need no help in getting started. Shutting down is where he stutters.

I did very much! I didn't realize Central Park was that large. How smart of them to save the land for something so beautiful. Love the photos too--it feels like I'm there walking about. Thanks for sharing this Dave.
