Concord Point Lighthouse

Updated on January 28, 2015

The Concord Point Lighthouse Still Shines

The Concord Point Lighthouse is situated in the city of Havre de Grace, Maryland where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Susquehanna River. It is one of the oldest lighthouses on the East Coast that is still in operation. The lighthouse was built in 1827 to steer ships away from the dangerous currents at the mouth of the Susquehanna River.

Though in a state of neglect and disrepair for many years, the Concord Point Lighthouse has been fully restored and attracts many visitors. It is also a favorite and beautiful location for outdoor weddings. The lighthouse is open to the public during the spring and summer months and offers gorgeous views of the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas.

Lighthouse Construction

As you enter the Concord Point Lighthouse, you will notice the heavy tongue and groove mahoghany door. A spiral staircase takes you to the top of the lighthouse. On the way take note of the 3 foot walls at the base of the lighthouse and eighteen inch walls at the very top. The walls are made of local Port Deposit granite and the floor of cut stone. Twenty-seven granite steps lead to the illuminating lantern at the top of the lighthouse.

The tower including the lantern is 36 feet tall. Once at the top, enjoy the beautiful views of the top of the spectacular Chesapeake Bay.
