Cyprus in Pictures

Updated on February 6, 2013

A photographic journey to the island of Cyprus

Cyprus is located in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean sea. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia. It covers an area of 9,251 square kiometersI and it is dominated by two mountain ranges.Troodos in the centre of the island and the Pentadaktylos range to the North. The highest peak is mount Olympus (yes,we have one too) with an altitude of 1952m.

This is a photo-lens so I will let the pictures do the talking !

If you need more information about Cyprus I have included several links you can follow. All the pictures used are from my flickr photostream and by CostaDinos.Make sure you visit his photostream (there is a BIG link on this lens) - it's worth it !

Fauna

Agrino - The Cyprus Moufflon

The Cyprus Moufflon (ovis gmelini ophion) is one of the ancestors of all domesticated sheep breeds we know today. It basically a type of wild sheep and it inhabits the forests of the island of Cyprus, mainly in the Troodos and Pafos mountains. It is called agrino in Greek which roughly translates as "wild". It is the largest inland mammal of Cyprus and the islands national animal !

Lepus capensis - Hare

This is a very shy animal. It's numbers are declining in the past few years due to an increase in the population of the red fox and hunting.

I'm pleased to see that you have visted the real Cyprus. Not many people see the snow at Troodos and the pink flamingos are only seen at a particular time of year on the Salt Lake. I have only ever seen the Moufflon in a section of forest especially fenced off just for them.

This is a brilliant lens about Cyprus with some great photography.
