Doo Town, Tasmania

Updated on June 20, 2014

Doo Town, Tasmania, Australia

Doo Town is a small holiday town, situated on Pirates Bay about 80 kilometres from Hobart, Tasmania. It is on the Tasman Peninsular on the road to the Blowhole. The shacks (cottages) of Doo Town are located on two roads - Blowhole Road and Tasman Arch Road. Many of the houses have "doo" names. They include names such as "Just Doo It", "Sheil Doo", "Doo Love It", "Doo Little", "Wee Doo", "Xanadu", "Didgeri-Doo", "Much-A-Doo", "Af-2-Doo", and "Doo-N-Time".

Please feel free to let your creative juices flow and make suggestions for more names for Doo Town houses.

All the photos on this page were taken by me unless otherwise noted.

For my international visitors, the 40 on the sign above stands for 40 kph (kilometres per hour) - the speed limit for driving through the town. This is equivalent to about 25 miles per hour.

History of Doo Town

There is some dispute over which name started the doo craze. Some references say that it all began with the shack named, “Doo-Little”. Other sources state that the tradition dates back to 1935 when Hobart architect, Eric Round, named his weekend shack, "Doo I". This was followed by Charles Gibson naming his shack, "Doo Me" and Bill Eldridge naming his, "Doo Us". Today many people still carry on the custom. Even the icecream shop at the end of the road has the name, "Doo-Lishus".

Doo you like the idea of having all the houses in a town named according to a theme?

Doo Town Names

In January 2012 I went for a stroll along the two streets of Doo Town taking photos of many of the houses. Some of the names were a bit tricky to spot, so I know I missed some.

It is an interesting place on the way to famous Port Arthur, with a great surfing beach.
