Schengen treaty = 25 nations -- free movement across borders --

Iceland, Norway, Switzerland have signed it, despite not being EU members; while UK, Ireland, Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Romania, Bulgaria, Vatican have not signed despite being part of EU.

The EU came into being on 1 November 1993 throught the Treaty of Maastricht. It was formed on the lines of European Economic Community. A single market system, with commonh economic policies, defines the EU. Sixteen EU members have adopted a common trading currency called the euro; these countries fall in the eurozone, viz., Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.
