Fabulous Central Florida
Fall in Love with Florida's Scenic Beauty, Wildlife and Attractions
I thought that Florida must be over-hyped, but then I moved there and found out for myself how fabulous Florida really is. Browse through my list of pages and see for yourself all the fun things to do and see in Florida.
Besides the many man-made attractions, the state has its natural beauty going for it and warm winter weather as well. No wonder it tops the list of vacation destinations and draws new residents like a magnet.
I'll share some of my photos of fabulous Florida for you to enjoy.

Snow White and Other Disney Character Photos
It was always a treat to see the Disney characters live and in person (so to speak) when we visited the theme parks. Although I never waited in line with all the kiddies to get my picture taken, I did capture some photos with my camera and zoom.
It amazed me how a young cast member could transform with costume and a wig into a very realistic cartoon character. They did a marvelous job of casting.
No wonder that star-struck youngsters felt they were meeting the actual character. Many little girls dressed in their own costume to visit the park. Miniature Cinderellas and other princesses abounded in the crowds. How sweet they looked decked out as their favorite Disney star.
Which character would you choose if you could have your picture taken with one?

Fantasy of Flight (Central Florida/Polk County)
This is a superb museum. I particularly liked the WWII bomber. As you walk inside, you hear the engine sounds and feel the vibration to get the feeling that the crew had while out on a bombing mission.
Pilots can actually take some of the planes from Fantasy of Flight up in the air. All the time while I'm out on the patio or out golfing, I hear the sound of vintage aircraft going overhead.
These Mermaids Have Entertained Generations of Florida Visitors
- The Weeki Wachee Mermaids
Mermaids? Are you kidding me? Are they for real? That's what I thought as a little boy. This was long before Ariel won her prince in the Little Mermaid and before I learned of Sea Sirens in the craggy coves of the Rhine River in German that lured...
Plan to spend half a day (minimum) here. Lots to see and learn. It's not just to entertain children. I found it quite informative and the demonstrations of alligator wrestling was fun. They feed the alligators so you can watch them leap from the water for food.
There's a zipline, a train ride through the alligator infested swamps and much more to see.

Arabian Nights Dinner/Horse Show (Kissimmee)
One of the best of the themed dinner shows in Kissimmee/Orlando area. The horses perform marvelously. We took a visitor there and the meal was tasty and the entertainment top-rate.
There are other themed dinner shows to try out as well.

- Identify the Water Birds
It isn't always simple to tell waterbirds apart. Was that a great egret, snowy egret or white ibis? There are many kinds of water birds. Some look quite similar, so it can be tricky to identify them. If you want to tell an anhinga from a cormorant or

- All About Baby Alligators
I had the rare opportunity yesterday to see a baby alligator riding on its mother's back. This sighting was in a lake by the golf course where we play several days a week. Somewhere in the brushy areas of the course must be an alligator nest. I'll be

Sometimes I don't know if I'm going golfing or on a wildlife safari. I always tuck my camera into the golf cart storage compartment and add an extra set of batteries. Living south of Orlando, in Central Florida, we never know what we'll see on the go

Florida - Water Everywhere
One of the first things I noticed about Florida was how much water there was. It rains more during the summer, usually a brief afternoon shower or thunderstorm. This creates a lush summer landscape with small lakes, large lakes, swamps, and rivers. This is great for the wildlife and for anyone who loves scenic views.
In developed areas, they have to dig retention ponds to accommodate the daily summer rains and the run-off from those. These provide attractive views for the residents.
The natural lakes and man-made retention ponds provide plenty of food for water birds like the limpkin shown here. Florida has the highest concentration of breeding bald eagles of any state (except for Alaska).
In addition to the pretty lakes which boaters and fisherman love, there are lots of swampy areas. At first glance, the scene below doesn't look like a water scene. It is. Look closely and you'll see it is small floating plants and in a few places you see the water.
Of course, the swamps and lakes and retention ponds provide ideal habitat for alligators. Here's one sunning itself by the lake in our retirement community.
I asked a real estate agent when we were looking at a property, "are there alligators here?" She said, "if you have water, then there are alligators."
Don't forget the rivers. In Florida, there's the mighty St John and many other rivers.
All this water makes great recreational areas in the state of Florida and plenty of scenic beauty. I didn't even include the ocean and beaches here. I'll save those for another post.
